Tuesday Poem: “walking into the nor’easter”
walking into the nor’easter —
on the horizon
Horomaka* or cloud?

* Horomaka is a Maori name for Banks Peninsular
Toward the end of last year I spent upward of 5 weeks in a remote coastal location, working on my current book.
I also wrote a number of haiku during that time, which I am currently featuring in the Tuesday slot. As these are works in progress, your feedback/critique is welcome.

Hello Helen. What a lovely thing to do…spend all that time in a remote coastal location writing…I love this haiku.
More so because I can relate to nor’easters in Canterbury and because I have always preferred the name Horomaka for Bank’s Peninsula. It has such a ring to it. In spite of having said all that and because it has rhythm, I think you could leave out the asterisk and explanation and put some ref at the end of whatever collection it is going into. Horomaka is obviously a place and it’s ok to have that mystery. That’s my opinion anyway 🙂
Thank you for commenting, Helen.:) And I agree, I’ve always loved Horomaka as a name: it does have such a ring to it. Whenever I return to Christchurch, whether by plane or car, I usually always say, “There’s Horomaka!”–aka “almost home.”
I also agree that the asterisk undermines the flow of the haiku but I suppose I am mindful that a lot of the blog readers are not from NZ, but looking for a less obtrusive way of conveying the information could still be the go.
With regards to “whatever collection it is going in”–I really appreciate the vote of confidence but I suspect that may be some way off. (Alas.) 😉
