Those “Oh, No!” Moments
Speaking of copyediting, which I have been on and off, but most recently when Wrapping Up The Copyedit, I’ve traversed everything from comma placement, spelling and grammar, through fact checking, identifying continuity and logic flaws, to disposing of deus ex machinas.
The one thing I didn’t mention was that moment when you have just finished patting yourself on the back for a job well done (or so you believe), and settled down for what you consider some well deserved relaxation — only to sit bolt upright again, exclaiming, “Oh, no! Did I remember to check…”
A few years back, with The Gathering Of The Lost, I was on my way to Wellington to help launch Mary Victoria’s third-in-series, Oracle’s Fire, when I had my “Oh, no” moment. Needless to say, I had to do some hasty checking and re-editing over the weekend.
With Daughter of Blood, however, I am pleased to say that my post-copyedit “oh, no” moment proved groundless. When I checked, I found the potential logic flaw had been addressed.
Phew …
