What I’m Reading: “Thief’s Magic” by Trudi Canavan
Last Sunday, I owned up to Trudi Canavan’s Angel of Storms being the latest book on my teetery-tottery TBR table.
Which is great, but it spurred me on to seize the first book in Trudi’s new Millenium’s Rule series from the middle of that precarious pile — and yes, total collapse did almost ensue — and Start Reading.
So that’s what I’m busy reading this long weekend (yes, it is a long weekend here — Canterbury Anniversary Day, no less.)
In last weekend’s post, I linked to an early review of Angel of Storms that said, (among much else): “the world(s) building is awesome.”
I have to say, I com-ple-at-ly agree with respect to Thief’s Magic. I am very impressed by the world-(or ‘worlds’, I havena quite determined which it is yet)-building. There are two distinct milieux (and point-of-view characters) — the one steampunkish (nice!) and Victorian, the other Renaissance-Italianate (also good.)
The magic system is also interesting and it’s clear thought has gone into how it all works.
Suffice it to say that I am looking forward to “reading on” over the weekend.
But how about you: what are you reading — or hoping to read — this weekend?
I have just finished “Shards of Hope” by Nalini Singh.
It was an awesome read – paranormal romance, science fiction and political thriller rolled into one book.
Then to start on some short fiction from Asimov’s Magazine
Is that Nalini’s latest, June? And is it a new series?
I’ll be interested to hear if there are any short stories that particularly wow you.
“Shards of Hope” is a new release for this year.
It is part of the Psy-Changeling series – the 14th book.
Oh dear, looks like I have to add ‘Thief’s Magic” to my TBR like now. I’m a sucker for awesome worldbuilding.
Alas, I didn’t get to read anything this weekend (I spent most of it staring at other people’s horses and wishing mine weren’t lame so I could have joined in the fun!) but next weekend I think I might get stuck into “Promis of Blood” by Brian McKellan. It’s been calling to me from the shelf, and I’m going to glue my butt to the chair and get stuck in.
I’ve heard good things, Belinda, so shall be interested to hear your report.:)
