The Inaugural National Writers Forum — Happening Now!
Well, officially it’s happening tomorrow, but author and NZ Society of Authors President-of-Honour, Joan Rosier-Jones, will be delivering the Janet Frame Memorial Lecture at 5 pm this
evening, so that feels like the beginning of what will be an all-weekend event to me. 🙂
The Forum proper kicks-off tomorrow morning at 9 am with a keynote address from UK novelist and journalist, Chris Cleave, followed by a weekend of what promises to be stimulating, informative, and even challenging panels, masterclasses, and workshops.
I’ll be delivering my masterclass at 9 am on Sunday morning and as those who are “…on Anything, Really” regulars will know, it’s on the topic of:
Establishing ambiance and milieu is part of all fiction, but the art of creating worlds that are other to what we know is integral to Fantasy literature — and mastering it is essential to the “craft” of those writing in this genre. In this session, award-winning fantasy author, Helen Lowe, will examine the building blocks for “fantastic” world-building, including how to “make it real” for readers. If you’re keen to explore the territory of JK Rowling and George RR Martin, Neil Gaiman and Ursula Le Guin, this is the session for you. At least one hands-on exercise will be included, with more depending on time and numbers.”
I am looking forward to it — and to the whole weekend in fact, and shall report back here as time allows, but definitely on Monday if not before.
I hope you are having a great time at this event. It is a very good weekend to be indoors.
Thank you, June, I did and am just about to “finally” post on it now! 😉
