What’s Coming Up
Posting on a Wednesday, you may be thinking, when it’s been Monday and Thursday for a few years now: what’s up with that?
What, indeed? But with a few things coming up I fancied doing an extra post to herald them.
The Supernatural Undergound
Obviously there’ll be a Supernatural Underground post on 1 May, in which I’ll continue my “Worldbuilding in Fantasy” series — check in over there, but also here, to find out which Fantasy, and fantastic, world I’m featuring next month. π
The Voyages of Cinrak the Dapper, and an Interview With AJ Fitzwater
Speaking of worldbuilding, or rather segueing from that, sometime in the near future I’ll be posting an interview with Christchurch friend and fellow author, AJ Fitzwater. I’ll be chatting with AJ about their new-out collection of linked short fiction, The Voyages of Cinrak the Dapper, including exploring Cinrak’s world of Rodentdom. I’m really looking forward to it and hope you’ll enjoy it just as much. By way of further heralding the event, here’s a very short synopsis of what CINRAK’s all about:
Dapper. Lesbian. Capybara. Pirate.
Cinrak the Dapper is a keeper of secrets, a righter of wrongs, the saltiest capybara on the sea and a rider of both falling stars and a great glass whale. Join her, her beloveds, the rat Queen Orvilia and the marmot diva Loquolchi, lead soprano of the Theatre Rat-oyal, her loyal cabin kit, Benj the chinchilla, and Agnes, last of the great krakens, as they hunt for treasures of all kinds and find adventures beyond their wildest dreams. Let Sir Julius Vogel Award-winning storyteller A.J. Fitzwater take you on a glorious journey about finding yourself, discovering true love and exploring the greatest secrets of the deep. Also, dapperness.
Sounds fun, huh? π By the way, I’ve linked to AJ’s blog through their name, above, but you can also follow them on Twitter: @ajfitzwater
Inside The Writing Life

Inside the writing life…
On April 20th, when I posted on Writing Long Form Fiction & WALL #4 Progress, I also undertook to post a little more from Inside the Writing Life, and will start by responding more fully to the comments on that post. For the very Important Reason that they sparked a few more thoughts on How I Write, which is not entirely disconnected from Why I Write, and so I suspect qualifies as insider material.
So long as inspiration continues I’ll be alternating the Insider theme with About The Characters — and quite possibly the odd randomly themed post, to boot. π
(The blog is, after all, eponymously “on Anything, Really”… )

Change springs eternal: A Traveller’s Guide no more…
On which note, what I won’t be continuing with, for now, is the Traveller’s Guide To Haarth. Mainly because it felt a little bit too much like A Geography of Haarth revisited and I just couldn’t get excited about that. And when I tried to get a little more creative with the whole idea it felt like I was siphoning creative energy from WALL #4 and I wasn’t up for that either.
WALL #4 definitely comes first—and one important way that works is by keeping the blog and book writing channels of the writing life distinct. So no more Traveller’s Guide for now, but I’ll definitely be revisiting all Haarth related matters once WALL #4 is in the can. Roll on that day. π
Just by way of a final heads-up, because I’m posting this on Wednesday, the Insider’s post will go up on Friday (rather than Thursday.) I’ll look forward to seeing you again then. π
Thanks for mentioning The Voyages of Cinrak the Dapper by A.J. Fitzwater! This book sounds charmingly original and fascinating. I’ll have to put it on my reading list. π
It does, doesn’t it? I’m sure AJ will be delighted to know Cinrak is making friends in Finland.:)
