Gorgeous Words From Charles Dickens
“It was one of those March days when the sun shines hot and the wind blows cold: when it is summer in the light, and winter in the shade.”
~ from Great Expectations (1861)

I do love me some gorgeous words, and it’s hard to beat this snippet from the great Mr Dickens.
The other aspect that always strikes me is that Dickens will have been writing of the Northern Hemisphere’s early spring, while March is early autumn here in the Southern Hemisphere. And yet the March days here may be exactly that same mix of brightness and cloud, warmth and cold. 🙂
My Mother’s favorite author. She has passed now and would be 88 coming up this May 1st. She left me a dear remembrance of one of his books. It’s a first edition 1884 I believe is copyright. Handing down this book to me I’ve taken time to read a lot of his quotes and learning what a beautiful gifted man he was. And his heartfelt love for the lost poor forsaken souls in life. And the beauty of the world and how he writes it down in words. Gods gift! Thank you for sharing it.
I am glad you enjoyed the quote, Brenda. Your mother’s edition of Great Expectations sounds very special.
Dickens definitely does have a way with words and with characters, and several of his books (e.g. The Old Curiosity Shop; Oliver Twist; A Christmas Carol) were hugely influential in terms of social change.
I may have another Dickens quote in a week or so, so “watch this space.” 😀
