{"id":10265,"date":"2011-12-08T06:30:19","date_gmt":"2011-12-07T17:30:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/?p=10265"},"modified":"2011-12-07T21:14:25","modified_gmt":"2011-12-07T08:14:25","slug":"ursula-bethell-creative-new-zealand-residency-in-creative-writing-2012","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2011\/12\/08\/ursula-bethell-creative-new-zealand-residency-in-creative-writing-2012\/","title":{"rendered":"Ursula Bethell Creative New Zealand Residency in Creative Writing 2012"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m delighted to be able to let you all know that I&#8217;ve been awarded the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arts.canterbury.ac.nz\/ursula_bethell_residency.shtml\"><strong>Ursula Bethell Creative New Zealand Residency in Creative Writing 2012<\/strong><\/a> at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.canterbury.ac.nz\/\"><strong>University of Canterbury<\/strong><\/a>, jointly with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.otago.ac.nz\/press\/booksauthors\/otagoauthors\/davideggleton.html\">David Eggleton<\/a>, a leading New Zealand poet, editor, critic, writer, and filmmaker. David is currently the editor of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.otago.ac.nz\/press\/landfall\/index.html\"><strong>Landfall<\/strong><\/a>, New Zealand&#8217;s longest established literary journal.<\/p>\n<p>Needless to say, it is a tremendous honour to be awarded the residency and even more so to share it with a fellow writer of David Eggleton&#8217;s calibre. At present it is proposed that I hold the residency until July 31 2012, and David Eggleton for the remainder of the year.<\/p>\n<p>The project I will be working on within that period is <span>The Wall of Night Book Three,<\/span> <em>Daughter of Blood<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<\/p>\n<p>For those who are not familiar with it, here is a brief description of the Ursula Bethell Residency:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;The Ursula Bethell Residency, jointly funded by Creative New Zealand, was established in 1979 to provide support for New Zealand writers and foster New Zealand writing. The Residency allows authors of proven merit in all areas of literacy and creative activity, including drama, fiction and poetry, an opportunity to work on an approved project within an academic environment.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Applicants should be authors of proven merit normally resident in New Zealand, or New Zealanders temporarily resident overseas.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10277\" style=\"width: 100px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2011\/12\/08\/ursula-bethell-creative-new-zealand-residency-in-creative-writing-2012\/ursula2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10277\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10277\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10277 \" title=\"ursula2\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/ursula2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"90\" height=\"119\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-10277\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Portrait of Ursula Bethell<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Ursula Bethell, 1874-1945, for whom the residency is named, is recognised as one of the pioneers of modern New Zealand poetry and the following summation is from <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Dictionary of New Zealand Biography:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Like others of her generation she was forced to confront the tension between her English origins and sympathies and her New Zealand milieu. In addition she was drawn to examine the disjunctions between religious certainty and everyday experience.
