Recently I mentioned that I was beavering away on a guest post around “Making Epic Fantasy New”—and now that post is “live” on SF Signal<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Here’s the opening salvo:<\/p>\n

“Making Epic Fantasy\u00a0 New—Do We Need To?”<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/h3>\n

At the end of last year I sat down to write a post on \u201cmaking epic fantasy new.\u201d I had been seeing opinions for some time that was critical of epic, from the aspersion that the genre itself is ho-hum, to allegations that it is variously monocultural, reactionary and misogynist. I was also mindful that when The Heir of Night<\/strong> was released in the US my Big Idea post on John Scalzi\u2019s Whatever<\/a> addressed concerns around some contemporary epic fantasy \u2013 chiefly that issues of \u2018good\u2019 and \u2018evil\u2019 were not only portrayed in absolute terms, but that affiliation to one or the other depended more on what color \u201chat\u201d a protagonist wore, rather than focusing on his or her actual behavior.<\/em><\/p>\n

Yet somehow, the \u201cmaking epic fantasy new\u201d post just wouldn\u2019t come together …”<\/em><\/p>\n
