And to personalise it all, two of my friends, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bookcouncil.org.nz\/writers\/hallbernadette.html\"><strong>Bernadette Hall<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bookcouncil.org.nz\/writers\/harlowmichael.html\"><strong>Michael Harlow<\/strong><\/a>, are in the running for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.booksellers.co.nz\/awards\/new-zealand-post-book-awards\/finalists-2010#poetry\"><strong>NZ Post Book Award for Poetry<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Just to be even handed, I featured first <a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2010\/08\/17\/tuesday-poem-the-fox-by-bernadette-hall\/\"><strong>Bernie<\/strong><\/a> and then <a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2010\/08\/24\/tuesday-poem-i-am-a-tyger-by-michael-harlow\/\">Michael<\/a> as my <strong>Tuesday Poets<\/strong> over the past two weeks. All three finalists, including former Te Mata Estate Poet Laureate, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bookcouncil.org.nz\/Writers\/Profiles\/Turner,%20Brian\"><strong>Brian Turner<\/strong><\/a>, were also featured on the <a href=\"http:\/\/tuesdaypoem.blogspot.com\/2010\/07\/tuesday-poem-blog-celebrates-new.html\"><strong>Tuesday Poem hub<\/strong><\/a> on 30 July, <strong>NZ National Poetry Day<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Also in the running for the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.booksellers.co.nz\/awards\/new-zealand-post-book-awards\/finalists-2010#fiction\">NZ Post Book Award for Fiction<\/a><\/strong> is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.owenmarshall.net.nz\/\"><strong>Owen Marshall<\/strong><\/a>, for his short fiction collection, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.booksellers.co.nz\/awards\/new-zealand-post-book-awards\/living-moon\"><em><strong>Living as a Moon<\/strong><\/em><\/a> (Vintage).\u00a0 Owen was my creative writing mentor a few years back, through the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.authors.org.nz\/wawcs0137984\/idDetails=165\/Mentor%20Programme\">NZ Society of Author\u2019s\/Creative New Zealand programme<\/a>, and is often spoken of as NZ&#8217;s foremost contemporary short fiction writer. But if <em><strong>Living as a Moon<em><strong> <\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/em>wins tonight it will be the first time Owen has won the fiction award for a short story collection. He has won previously, but for a novel, <em><strong>Harlequin Rex<\/strong><\/em>, in 2000.<\/p>\n<p>The other contenders for the Fiction Award are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bookcouncil.org.nz\/writers\/wongalison.html\"><strong>Alison Wong<\/strong><\/a>, for <em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.co.nz\/books?id=C3itYZlNpNkC&amp;printsec=frontcover&amp;dq=alison+wong+as+the+moon+turns+silver&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=fEeCxGqF14&amp;sig=I48BFAe92Q4T7OSaezICmwAFMbI&amp;hl=en&amp;ei=5jh2TK-tMIiWsgO8t4ChDQ&amp;sa=X&amp;oi=book_result&amp;ct=result&amp;resnum=1&amp;ved=0CBQQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\">As The Moon Turns Silver<\/a> <\/strong><\/em>(Penguin) and <a href=\"http:\/\/fionafarrell.com\/\"><strong>Fiona Farrell&#8217;s<\/strong><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/fionafarrell.com\/limestonean.html\"><em><strong>Limestone<\/strong><\/em><\/a> (Vintage).<\/p>\n<p>To check out the <strong>General Non-Fiction<\/strong> finalists, click <a href=\"http:\/\/www.booksellers.co.nz\/awards\/new-zealand-post-book-awards\/finalists-2010#gen_non\"><strong>here<\/strong><\/a>.
