I was doubtful when I read the back, because the &#8220;room&#8221; in question is one of those ones where women and children are kidnapped and held captive for years on end. (And no, that&#8217;s not a spoiler, it really is right there on the back cover.) But I found it a wonderful read and so was delighted to see that it has made it onto the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.themanbookerprize.com\/news\/stories\/1451\"><strong>Booker Short List<\/strong><\/a> this week, together with <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.themanbookerprize.com\/prize\/authors\/278\">Andrea Levy&#8217;s<\/a> <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.themanbookerprize.com\/prize\/books\/427\">The Long Song<\/a>.<\/em><\/strong><em> <\/em>I was privileged to interview <strong>Andrea Levy<\/strong> earlier this year for <a href=\"http:\/\/plainsfm.org.nz\/programme\/women-air\/\"><strong>Women on Air, Plains 96.9 FM<\/strong><\/a>, and to compere her public event here in Christchurch, which makes the progression of <strong><em>The Long Song<\/em><\/strong> to the short list that much more personal.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Battle-Axe.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1321\" title=\"Battle Axe\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Battle-Axe.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"91\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>In terms of what I&#8217;m reading right now, because of being away at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aussiecon4.org.au\/\"><strong>Worldcon<\/strong><\/a> and coming home to earthquake clean up, I haven&#8217;t had time to do any new reading. But what I have brought back is<a href=\"http:\/\/www.saradouglass.com\/\"> <strong>Sara Douglass&#8217;s<\/strong><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.saradouglass.com\/battleaxe.html\"><em><strong>Battle Axe<\/strong> <\/em><strong>(Book One of the Axis Trilogy)<\/strong><\/a>, which I was given in my gift bag as part of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.voyageronline.com.au\/default.cfm\"><strong>Voyager&#8217;s<\/strong><\/a> 15th anniversary celebration, held at Worldcon. I have never read <strong>Sara Douglass<\/strong> before, but I have heard good things&#8211;and <a href=\"http:\/\/jopre.wordpress.com\/2010\/07\/16\/writing-beyond\/\"><strong>Joanna Preston<\/strong> <\/a>even <a href=\"http:\/\/www.librarything.com\/topic\/80588#2088688\">compared<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/helenlowe.info\/wallofnight.html\"><em><strong>Heir<\/strong><\/em><\/a> to Sara s&#8217;s Axis series a few weeks back, so I am looking forward to checking it out.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You may recall that I had the Booker longlisted Room, by Emma Donoghue to read two weeks back&#8212;and I loved it.
