And quests. And heroes. And magic. Whenever she read a new story and loved it, she always wanted to write one \u201cjust like that\u201d, one day, when she was grown-up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Just a few years later, the same girl picked up a book called <strong><em>Waylander<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 and was instantly entranced: by the darkness and danger of the story, by the inner struggle of the protagonist for redemption, and the magic and heroism of The Thirty. A new and strong thread had just entered the weave of the kind of story this young woman wanted to tell\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">As you have doubtless worked out, the young woman was me and the novels of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/David_Gemmell\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">David Gemmell<\/span><\/a> were about to assume a strong presence on my Fantasy book shelf, with both <em><strong>Legend<\/strong><\/em> and <em><strong>The King Beyond the Gate<\/strong><\/em>, and then the SIPSTRASSI novels, quickly sitting alongside <em><strong>Waylander<\/strong><\/em>. So many aspects of these novels \u201cspoke\u201d to my deep love of storytelling:\u00a0 the grand sweep of the stories and the sense of contending light and dark, as well as right or wrong being a choice we make\u2014and the way the characters\u2019 choices are so often around sacrifice and duty. But at the same time, friendship and love are always the heart of the story.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11044\" style=\"width: 220px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2012\/01\/14\/all-the-pretty-covers\/heirusa-6\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-11044\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11044\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-11044\" title=\"HeirUSA\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/HeirUSA-210x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"210\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/HeirUSA-210x300.jpg 210w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/HeirUSA-105x150.jpg 105w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/HeirUSA.jpg 474w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 210px) 100vw, 210px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-11044\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">USA<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">And yes, I really did want to write stories \u201cjust like that\u201d when I grew up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Whether or not I am yet sufficiently grown up remains debatable, but nonetheless it means a great deal to me that the first novel I wrote, <strong><em>The Heir of Night<\/em><\/strong>, has now won the <a href=\"http:\/\/gemmellaward.com\/profiles\/blogs\/david-gemmell-legend-award-winners-2012-announced\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Gemmell Morningstar Award<\/span><\/a>. First and foremost, because of the legacy of David Gemmell and the sense the Award gives of following in his footsteps.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Secondly, and this is also tremendous, because it means people \u2018out there\u2019, and not just one or two but numbers of people, must have not only read <strong><em>The Heir of Night<\/em><\/strong> but enjoyed it enough to vote for it \u2013 a fact that makes me feel both humble and deeply grateful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Last but not least, I am thrilled HEIR has won because it affirms a truth that I would like to believe is self evident, but upon which a body of internet opinion occasionally casts doubt:\u00a0 that is, that it is possible to be a woman writing epic-heroic fantasy and still have your work read, and taken seriously, by genre readers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">I don\u2019t think there can be any surer affirmation of that, than <strong><em>The Heir of Night<\/em><\/strong> winning the Gemmell Morningstar Award tonight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">But celebrating <strong><em>The Heir of Night\u2019s<\/em><\/strong> success would not be complete without some important &#8220;thank you&#8217;s.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Firstly, thank you to editor Jenni Hill, as well as Orbiteers Anne Clarke, Joanna Kramer, Emily Rowland and Rose Tremlett, amongst many others who have been part of HEIR making its bow to the world.
