I&#8217;m still not quite well enough to write a detailed report, but I&#8217;ll give you my thumbnail feedback:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2011\/09\/18\/just-arrived-the-language-of-flowers-by-vanessa-diffenbaugh-the-quantum-thief-by-hannu-rajaniemi\/quantum-thief\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8205\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-8205\" title=\"Quantum Thief\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Quantum-Thief-98x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"98\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Quantum-Thief-98x150.jpg 98w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Quantum-Thief.jpg 146w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 98px) 100vw, 98px\" \/><\/a>The Quantum Thief<\/strong><\/em> by Hannu Rajaniemi (Gollancz)<\/p>\n<p>I really enjoyed this book &#8212; it&#8217;s not only definitely space opera, but a richly baroque variant distinguished by the sheer imagination of the world building. A little light on the character development perhaps, but certainly not sufficiently so as to dis-satisfy&#8230; And because I felt <em>The Quantum Thief<\/em> fell close to the &#8220;science as magic&#8221; end of the space opera spectrum it may not be the right book for readers who like hard science fiction.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2012\/05\/26\/what-im-reading-started-early-took-my-dog-by-kate-atkinson\/started-early-took-my-dog\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-13837\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-13837\" title=\"Started-Early-Took-My-Dog\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Started-Early-Took-My-Dog-97x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"97\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Started-Early-Took-My-Dog-97x150.jpg 97w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Started-Early-Took-My-Dog.jpg 140w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 97px) 100vw, 97px\" \/><\/a>Started Early, Took My Dog<\/em><\/strong> by Kate Atkinson (Doubleday)<\/p>\n<p>This is the fourth in Kate Atkinson&#8217;s &#8220;Jackson Brodie&#8221; series and I found the story development\u00a0more even than with its predecessor <em>When Will There Be Good News<\/em>. It&#8217;s also classic Kate Atkinson, mixing several interlinked plots with a background of current and historic events, with a keen eye to the foibles and fallibility of our human condition. I&#8217;m always hard pushed to decide whether Atkinson&#8217;s Brodie novels are detective novels or social commenatry, but in either case,\u00a0<em>Started Early, Took My Dog<\/em> definitely got a tick in the &#8220;enjoyed&#8221; box.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2012\/07\/09\/what-im-reading-books-recently-completed\/the-crowfield-curse\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-14732\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-14732\" title=\"The-Crowfield-Curse\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/The-Crowfield-Curse-97x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"97\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/The-Crowfield-Curse-97x150.jpg 97w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/The-Crowfield-Curse.jpg 140w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 97px) 100vw, 97px\" \/><\/a>The Crowfield Curse<\/strong><\/em> by Pat Walsh (Chicken House)<\/p>\n<p><em>The Crowfield Curse<\/em> is junior fiction, published by small, specialist UK publisher <a href=\"http:\/\/doublecluck.com\/index.php\">Chicken House<\/a>. It came highly recommended by a friend and when I picked it up I was not disappointed &#8212; I loved the story&#8217;s mix of fantasy and medieval\u00a0 historical realism: the tale is set largely in a monastery (and its environs) and you can tell the author knows the period. The central character of Will is engaging and the plot well paced, with just the right balance of mystery, fear, and life affirming elements.
