(Rowena&#8217;s original point was slightly different, relating to science fiction still fundamentally being more respectable than fantasy, i.e. &#8216;science&#8217;&#8212;if not always &#8220;as we know it, Jim&#8221;&#8212;not &#8216;magic&#8217; based.)<\/p>\n<p>Paul Weimer even did a spin-off post on his own &#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.skyseastone.net\/jvstin\/\">Jvstin Style&#8221; blog<\/a>, with a post titled <strong>&#8220;Why Is Fantasy Ascendant Over SciFi&#8221;<\/strong> &#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.skyseastone.net\/jvstin\/unjvst\/008997.html\">here<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2011\/09\/03\/what-im-reading-surface-detail-by-iain-m-banks\/surfacedetailcover\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7902\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-7902\" title=\"surfacedetailcover\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/surfacedetailcover-97x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"97\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/surfacedetailcover-97x150.jpg 97w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/surfacedetailcover-194x300.jpg 194w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/surfacedetailcover.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 97px) 100vw, 97px\" \/><\/a>In response to Paul&#8217;s observation that: <em>&#8220;Since 2001, the future that seems to be ahead of us in the real world has gotten progressively darker, grittier and less appealing. It&#8217;s been more difficult to come up with an appealing future for SF. While SF is not predictive, the starting conditions have been more and more bleak to work with&#8221; &#8230; <\/em>and that fantasy offered a<em> &#8220;way out of the trap.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I in turn replied: <em>&#8220;the premise about bleakness does not hold so well, I feel, if one applies it to space opera. That is effectively \u201cfantasy in space\u201d but has been fading at much the same rate as more science based predictive SF &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2012\/08\/16\/hmm-i-wonder-am-i-really-right-about-space-opera\/reality-dysfunction\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-15364\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-15364\" title=\"Reality Dysfunction\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Reality-Dysfunction-93x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"93\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Reality-Dysfunction-93x150.jpg 93w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Reality-Dysfunction-186x300.jpg 186w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Reality-Dysfunction.jpg 296w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 93px) 100vw, 93px\" \/><\/a>But since then I&#8217;ve been thinking&#8212;hey, hold on a minute, am I <em>really<\/em> right about this? When I was thinking about space opera I was thinking about the old EE Doc Smith, westerns-in-space variety, which has by and large died out (but&#8212;<em>Firefly<\/em>, anybody?)\u00a0 Space Opera itself though&#8230; When I actually sat down and thought about it, there&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/whatever.scalzi.com\/\">John Scalzi<\/a> (<em>Old Man&#8217;s War<\/em>, <em>Redshirts<\/em>), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.peterfhamilton.co.uk\/\">Peter F Hamilton<\/a> (<em>The Reality Dysfunction<\/em> et al) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iain-banks.net\/science-fiction\/\">Iain M Banks<\/a> and his Culture novels, <a href=\"http:\/\/voxish.tripod.com\/\">Alastair Reynolds <\/a>(<em>Revelation Space<\/em>) not to mention Hannu\u00a0Rajaniemi&#8217;s <em>The Quantum Thief<\/em> (which I reported on <a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2012\/07\/09\/what-im-reading-books-recently-completed\/\">here<\/a>) all of who are currently writing what I would term space opera. (Note: I know this is not an exhaustive list, I&#8217;ve left off Ken McLeod for example&#8211;who else?)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2012\/08\/16\/hmm-i-wonder-am-i-really-right-about-space-opera\/redshirts\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-15365\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-15365\" title=\"RedShirts\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/RedShirts-100x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/RedShirts-100x150.jpg 100w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/RedShirts-201x300.jpg 201w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/RedShirts.jpg 218w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 100px) 100vw, 100px\" \/><\/a>Do I have a definition of &#8216;space opera&#8217;&#8212;well yes I do and its pretty loose (like space opera itself, he-he), but mainly I think of &#8216;space opera&#8217; as involving adventures in space, preferably with space ships and things like warp drives (or an equivalent), where the overall idea is loosely science based but not in a way that would prevent the story happening, and some of the themes can be pretty serious, and often it&#8217;s about telling big stories but it doesn&#8217;t has to be, and yes sometimes there is &#8216;magic&#8217; but we dress it up as science and everyone is happy&#8230; And it definitely doesn&#8217;t have to be a western lookalike but if you call it <em>Firefly<\/em> then it probably is&#8212;a western that is, and space opera, to boot! \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2011\/09\/18\/just-arrived-the-language-of-flowers-by-vanessa-diffenbaugh-the-quantum-thief-by-hannu-rajaniemi\/quantum-thief\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8205\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-8205\" title=\"Quantum Thief\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Quantum-Thief-98x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"98\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Quantum-Thief-98x150.jpg 98w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Quantum-Thief.jpg 146w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 98px) 100vw, 98px\" \/><\/a>So I think I may just have revised my thoughts from a week back and decided that in fact space opera is still very much with is&#8230; Whether it&#8217;s as big as Fantasy though, I don&#8217;t know&#8230; What do you think?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8212;<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>OK, OK, I did notice something else when I was putting together my non-exhaustive list of contemporary space opera authors&#8212;any guesses?
