But he is not alone in that respect. A reader in Australia wrote to tell me that:\u00a0 <em>\u201cThe thing I really like about \u2026 [the character of] \u2026 Kalan is that he has not lost his spirit even though he has become a person his whole family despises. He still has hope and kindness in his heart.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Yes, I thought, yes: that&#8217;s exactly right.<\/p>\n<p>Another reader also liked the heralds of the Guild, Jehane Mor and Tarathan of Ar, who have powers <em>\u201c\u2026and are not afraid to use them.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0 This particular reader found the heralds <em>\u201c\u2026 perhaps the other two most interesting characters of the whole book (the other two being Malian and Kalan.)\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6853\" style=\"width: 107px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2011\/07\/18\/the-heir-of-night-released-in-the-netherlands-today-as-kind-van-de-nacht\/netherlandsheir-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6853\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6853\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-6853\" title=\"NetherlandsHeir\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/NetherlandsHeir-97x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"97\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/NetherlandsHeir-97x150.jpg 97w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/NetherlandsHeir-195x300.jpg 195w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/NetherlandsHeir-667x1024.jpg 667w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/NetherlandsHeir.jpg 1775w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 97px) 100vw, 97px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6853\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Netherlands<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Different readers, different perspectives\u2014but as a writer I am rewarded to find readers being drawn to a range of the characters that appear within the series, especially since there are two principal characters (Malian, the Heir to the House of Night, and Kalan) and several others that count as \u201cmajor.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10951\" style=\"width: 104px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2012\/01\/11\/what-im-doing-my-writing-goal-for-2012\/lowe-erbin-der-nacht-5-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10951\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10951\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-10951 \" title=\"Lowe Erbin der Nacht (5)\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Lowe-Erbin-der-Nacht-5-94x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"94\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Lowe-Erbin-der-Nacht-5-94x150.jpg 94w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Lowe-Erbin-der-Nacht-5-189x300.jpg 189w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Lowe-Erbin-der-Nacht-5.jpg 410w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 94px) 100vw, 94px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-10951\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Germany<\/p><\/div>\n<p>One of these \u201cmajors\u201d is the Honor Captain, Asantir, and in my post on <em>&#8220;The Power of Names&#8221;<\/em> I discussed how her arrival in the story was relatively unexpected for me as the author and arose from a change in name. To find out the how and why, you will have to read the article, <a href=\"http:\/\/sonsofcorax.wordpress.com\/2012\/10\/11\/nanp-the-power-of-names\/\">here<\/a> &#8212; but what I learned from this process (but should have known given the number of Fantasy stories based around the concept!) is that names are powerful and changing them can be a dangerous business.<\/p>\n<p>Needless to say, whenever I think about changing anything about a character now, from name to hair color, I always do so with extreme care.
