{"id":17145,"date":"2012-11-20T06:30:46","date_gmt":"2012-11-19T17:30:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/?p=17145"},"modified":"2012-11-12T21:08:16","modified_gmt":"2012-11-12T08:08:16","slug":"tuesday-poem-a-poem-by-e-nesbit-from-the-story-of-the-treasure-seekers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2012\/11\/20\/tuesday-poem-a-poem-by-e-nesbit-from-the-story-of-the-treasure-seekers\/","title":{"rendered":"Tuesday Poem: A Poem by E Nesbit from &#8220;The Story of the Treasure Seekers&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>&#8230; a poem on children&#8217;s fun<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Oh when I wake up in my bed<br \/>\nAnd see the sun all fat and red,<br \/>\nI&#8217;m glad to have another day<br \/>\nFor all my different kinds of play.<\/p>\n<p>There are so many things to do&#8211;<br \/>\nThe things that make a man of you,<br \/>\nIf grown-ups did not get so vexed<br \/>\nAnd wonder what you will do next.<\/p>\n<p>I often wonder whether they<br \/>\nEver made up our kinds of play&#8211;<br \/>\nIf they were always good as gold<br \/>\nAnd only did what they were told.<\/p>\n<p>They like you best to play with tops<br \/>\nAnd toys in boxes, bought in shops;<br \/>\nThey do not even know the names<br \/>\nOf really interesting games.<\/p>\n<p>They will not let you play with fire<br \/>\nOr trip your sister up with wire,<br \/>\nThey grudge the tea-tray for a drum,<br \/>\nOr booby-traps when callers come.<\/p>\n<p>They don&#8217;t like fishing, and it&#8217;s true<br \/>\nYou sometimes soak a suit or two:<br \/>\nThey look on fireworks, though they&#8217;re dry,<br \/>\nWith quite a disapproving eye.<\/p>\n<p>They do not understand the way<br \/>\nTo get the most out of your day:<br \/>\nThey do not know how hunger feels<br \/>\nNor what you need between your meals.<\/p>\n<p>And when you&#8217;re sent to bed at night,<br \/>\nThey&#8217;re happy, but they&#8217;re not polite.<br \/>\nFor through the door you hear them say:<br \/>\n&#8216;He&#8217;s done his mischief for the day!&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>by E Nesbit<\/p>\n<p>from <em>&#8220;The Story of the Treasure Seekers&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<\/p>\n<p>I just thought this poem was fun&#8212;and with lines like <em>&#8220;They look on fireworks, though they&#8217;re dry\/\/With quite a disapproving eye&#8221;<\/em>, reassure that in some respects there is very little that is new under the sun.<\/p>\n<p>Or is that reassuring?
