The Open Mic readings have been of consistently high quality and we&#8217;ve had a programme of great guests as well&#8212;but with Joanna Preston, Owen Marshall, and Tusiata Avia as tonight&#8217;s featured poets, I feel that the quality is set to continue.<\/p>\n<p>Just to give you a &#8220;thumbnail&#8221; introduction to each poet:<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2012\/09\/21\/spring-fever-is-well-truly-here-with-the-poetry-in-performance-spring-season-2012\/7-9-2009five-poets-067a\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-16088\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-16088\" title=\"7-9-2009Five Poets 067a\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/7-9-2009Five-Poets-067a-102x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"102\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/7-9-2009Five-Poets-067a-102x300.jpg 102w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/7-9-2009Five-Poets-067a-51x150.jpg 51w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 102px) 100vw, 102px\" \/><\/a>Joanna Preston<\/strong> won both the inaugural Kathleen Grattan Award (New Zealand) 2008 and the Mary Gilmore Prize (Australia) in 2010, both highly prestigious awards, for her debut poetry collection, <strong><em>The Summer King<\/em><\/strong> (Otago University Press, 2009.) Of Samoan descent, Tusiata was born and raised in Christchurch, but has travelled and performed throughout the world.<\/p>\n<p>In 2004 she published her first collection of poetry, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vuw.ac.nz\/vup\/2004titleinformation\/wilddogs.html\">Wild Dogs Under My Skirt<\/a><\/em> (Wellington: VUP). Her second collection of poetry <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.victoria.ac.nz\/vup\/2009titleinformation\/bloodclot.aspx\">Bloodclot<\/a> <\/em>was published in February 2009.<\/p>\n<p>Tusiata&#8217;s poetry in performance is always fabulous&#8212;so I think you may be starting to see why I am looking forward to tonight&#8217;s event!<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<\/p>\n<p>For those of you who will be in or near Christchurch tonight, the evening will run from 6.30 pm at the CPSA hall, Christchurch Polytechnic on Madras Street, commencing with a BYO Open Mic.
