I posted this lovely, ancient tauparapara as my Tuesday Poem on February 7 of this year, to celebrate Waitangi Day, which always falls on February 6. I love Te Tangi A Te Matui<\/em>, and am thrilled both at the very positive reception its received and to be posting it again today as a “most-read” feature for 2012. <\/span><\/p>\n

Te Tangi A Te Matui<\/h3>\n

Kia whakarongo ake au
\nKi te tangi a te manu nei
\nA te matui<\/p>\n

Tui-i-i\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0Tui-i-i\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0Tuituia
\nTui i runga
\nTui i raro
\nTuia i waho
\nTuia i roto<\/p>\n

Tuia i te here tangata<\/p>\n

Ka rongo te po
\nKa ronga te ao<\/p>\n

Tuia i te muka tangata
\nI takea mai i Hawaiki nui
\nI Hawaiki roa
\nI Hawaiki paa mamao<\/p>\n

Te hono i wairua
\nKi te whaiao
\nKi to ao marama<\/p>\n

Tihe mauri ora!<\/p>\n

I listen
\nTo the cry of the bird
\nOf the matui, calling<\/p>\n

Tui-i-i\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0Tui-i-i\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0Tuituia
\nLet it be woven above
\nWoven below
\nWoven without
\nWoven\u00a0 within<\/p>\n

Interwoven with the thread of humanity<\/p>\n

Feel the peace of darkness (death)
\nFeel the peace of light (life)<\/p>\n

Bind together the people
\ndescended from great Hawaiki
\nfrom far off Hawaiki
\nfrom long distant Hawaiki<\/p>\n

The coming together of spirits
\nOut into the dawn
\nEmerging into the world of light.<\/p>\n

The spirit of life is in us!<\/p>\n

The incantation or tauparapara, Te Tangi A Matui<\/em>, is both traditional and very old. I first learned it as a child and young adult growing up in the King Country, where it was often used as a karanga, the traditional call that begins the welcome onto a marae. The translation was also as I was given to understand it then. I post it today to honour and celebrate Waitangi Day and the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi: Te Tiriti O Waitangi, the founding document and the founding act of our modern nation.<\/p>\n
