notions of quest and of chivalry, of tryst and tokens, of the trumpet blast at dawn, the banners of noon day, and the twilight of the gods&#8230;where the romance is&#8230; [that]&#8230;of Lancelot and Guinevere, Sir Gawain and the Loathly Lady, of Tristan and Isolde&#8230;\u00a0 <strong><em>&#8220;<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>In that sense, the High Fantasy version of epic could also equally well be called &#8220;High Romantic Fantasy&#8221; as opposed to the more recent &#8220;brutal realism&#8221; popularized by series such as George RR Martin&#8217;s <strong>A Song of Ice and Fire<\/strong> series (which began with <em>A Game of Thrones<\/em>), in particular.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2011\/08\/19\/six-great-non-human-heroes-of-sff-part-two\/summertree2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7617\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-7617\" title=\"summertree2\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/summertree2-96x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"96\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/summertree2-96x150.jpg 96w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/summertree2.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 96px) 100vw, 96px\" \/><\/a>Tolkien&#8217;s <em>The Lord Of The Rings<\/em> and Guy Gavriel Kay&#8217;s <strong>Fionavar <\/strong>trilogy<em><strong>,<\/strong><\/em> on the other hand, belong more in the High Fantasy quadrant of the epic &#8216;verse&#8212;with considerable High Romance as well, i.e. in the heroic, chivalric and mythic\/legendary elements of these stories.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2013\/03\/04\/antecedents-of-contemporary-high-fantasy-a-few-thoughts\/ivanhoe\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-19228\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-19228\" title=\"Ivanhoe\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Ivanhoe-97x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"97\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Ivanhoe-97x150.jpg 97w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Ivanhoe.jpg 195w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 97px) 100vw, 97px\" \/><\/a>Another way of thinking about this style of Fantasy literature is as High Romantic Adventure&#8212;a sense I tried to capture in the three quotes I included from <em>The Gathering Of The Lost <\/em>in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.supernaturalunderground.blogspot.co.nz\/2013\/03\/high-romantic-fantasy-gathering-of-lost.html\">Supernatural Underground post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>When I was making those selections, I realised there was an intervening step in the connection between contemporary High Fantasy and the romantic epics of the medieval era.\u00a0 Although touched on in epic poems such as Spenser&#8217;s <em>Faerie Queene<\/em>, it came into its own in the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Romanticism#English_literature\">Romantic era<\/a>, with the works of writers such as Walter Scott, including novels like <em>Ivanhoe<\/em>, and poems such as Byron&#8217;s <em>Childe Harold&#8217;s Pilgrimage.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2013\/03\/04\/antecedents-of-contemporary-high-fantasy-a-few-thoughts\/thedarktower7\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-19229\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-19229 alignleft\" title=\"Thedarktower7\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Thedarktower7-97x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"97\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Thedarktower7-97x150.jpg 97w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Thedarktower7-195x300.jpg 195w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Thedarktower7.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 97px) 100vw, 97px\" \/><\/a>I believe the Emerian knights of <em>The Gathering Of The Lost<\/em> can trace their literary lineage as much to works such as <em>Ivanhoe<\/em>, as to the medieval <em>Morte d&#8217;Arthur<\/em> or <em>The Song of Roland<\/em>&#8212;the latter referenced in Browning&#8217;s poem <em>&#8220;Childe Roland To The Dark Tower&#8221;<\/em>, which is echoed in its turn by Stephen King&#8217;s <strong>The Dark Tower<\/strong> Fantasy series.<\/p>\n<p>In the end, whether a story is epic fantasy, high fantasy, or even high romantic fantasy doesn&#8217;t really matter that much&#8212;these are all just labels and it&#8217;s the quality of the story being told that counts.
