Au Charbonnage<\/strong><\/em>
\nNovember 1880<\/em><\/p>\n

Dear Theo<\/p>\n

I am drawing again.
\nHere is a sketch of
\nThe Colliery,
\nthe miners\u2019 tavern at Laeken,
\nIt is in good repair
\ndon\u2019t you think?
\nThe miners are poor
\nand in need of salvation.
\nI have given them
\nmy money, my clothes,
\nmy food
\nand God\u2019s word.
\nThe converts are
\nelusive and I\u2019ve
\nlost a bit of weight.

As I noted in last week’s Tuesday Poem post<\/a>, I am currently running a series of poems in response to works of art, which will include a note from the poet. This week’s poem and note is from Laurice Gilbert, whose bio appears below.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>“All my Van Gogh poems are named for the paintings that they are written in response to. The date beneath the title is when the painting was completed. I set out with the\u00a0intention\u00a0of writing\u00a0enough to make up a\u00a0chapbook on their own, but life got in the way, which is why a small section of them has ended up in my collection, My Family\u00a0& Other Strangers<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0Some\u00a0have also been published\u00a0in Shot Glass Journal<\/em><\/a>, and I still have a few that haven’t seen the light of day. I haven’t entirely given up on the chapbook idea.”<\/span><\/p>\n
