{"id":2093,"date":"2010-10-26T06:00:52","date_gmt":"2010-10-25T17:00:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/?p=2093"},"modified":"2010-10-25T20:56:53","modified_gmt":"2010-10-25T07:56:53","slug":"tuesday-poem-van-gogh-in-aotearoa-by-siobhan-harvey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2010\/10\/26\/tuesday-poem-van-gogh-in-aotearoa-by-siobhan-harvey\/","title":{"rendered":"Tuesday Poem: &#8220;Van Gogh in Aotearoa&#8221; by Siobhan Harvey"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Van Gogh in Aotearoa<\/h3>\n<p>The spirit is alive<br \/>\nin <em>Starry Night<\/em> reproductions<br \/>\nwhich hang, like crucifixes,<br \/>\nin varsity bed-sits,<br \/>\n<em>petit bourgeois<\/em> do-ups<br \/>\nand <em>nouveau riche<\/em> villas<br \/>\nacross Aotearoa.<\/p>\n<p>In such replicas, he\u2019s reborn,<br \/>\npicks up his paintbrushes<br \/>\nand begins to set the All Blacks:<br \/>\nMcCaw, Howlett, So\u2019oialo,<br \/>\nupon the terra firma of his canvas<br \/>\nas if they\u2019re men at work, harvesting.<\/p>\n<p>Then, he finds his Arles in Akaroa,<br \/>\nwhere Port Louis-Philippe\u2019s spectre<br \/>\nbesets him with visions,<br \/>\nsmall prophecies, of fresh work:<br \/>\n<em>Landscape under a Summer Sky,<br \/>\nThe Rue Jolie Bridge at Akaroa,<br \/>\nThree White Cottages in Rue Balguerie.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Soon, forgetting sunflowers,<br \/>\nhe forms a fresh muse<br \/>\nfrom the <em>soleil<\/em>-radiance<br \/>\nof kaka-beak and kowhai.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, like Rangi and Papa,<br \/>\nhe brings land and sky together<br \/>\nin a blue-black darkness<br \/>\nabove the Desert Road<br \/>\nwhere stars are birthed so crisply<br \/>\nthey stand in place of him<br \/>\nand speak of things long dead.<\/p>\n<p>(c) Siobhan Harvey<\/p>\n<p>Reproduced here with the permission of the poet.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>About the Poem:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><em>Van Gogh in Aotearoa<\/em> was first published in <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Landfall<\/span> 215, (Otago University Press) 2008, and reproduced in <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Crest to Crest: Impressions of Canterbury Prose &amp; Poetry<\/span>, ed. Karen Zelas (Wily Publications) 2009.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of why I have chosen it as my Tuesday Poem&#8212;quite simply, I have loved <em>Van Gogh in Aotearoa <\/em>ever since Siobhan Harvey read it for a <strong>Women on Air: Plains 96.9 FM <\/strong>interview: I <em>think<\/em> because of how strongly it evokes a spirit of place, juxtaposing the reality of New Zealand culture and landscape against the enduring wonder of Van Gogh&#8217;s art in a sleight-of-word of poetic magic-realism.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>About the Poet: <\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Siobhan Harvey is the editor of <em>Our Own Kind: 100 New Zealand Poems about Animals<\/em> (Godwit, 2009) and <em>Words Chosen Carefully: New Zealand Writers in Discussion<\/em> (Cape Catley, 2010).
