{"id":22654,"date":"2013-10-07T06:30:06","date_gmt":"2013-10-06T17:30:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/?p=22654"},"modified":"2013-10-06T20:29:55","modified_gmt":"2013-10-06T07:29:55","slug":"what-makes-fantasy-epic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2013\/10\/07\/what-makes-fantasy-epic\/","title":{"rendered":"What Makes Fantasy Epic?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This isn&#8217;t going to be a big post, but with <a href=\"http:\/\/helenlowe.info\/gatheringofthelost.html\"><strong><em>The Gathering Of The Lost<\/em><\/strong><\/a> making the shortlist for the Gavid Gemmell <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gemmellaward.com\/profiles\/blogs\/2013-shortlists-revealed\">Legend Award<\/a>, I&#8217;ve been thinking a bit about what makes epic fantasy &#8220;epic.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>One suggestion made a few years back was that to qualify as &#8220;epic&#8221;, a fantasy had to be about large scale war &#8212; and certainly a lot of epic fantasies are. My own view is that large scale war is not a prerequisite for epic, but that to qualify a story does have to in some way encompass the grand sweep &#8212; very possibly world altering &#8212; of events.<\/p>\n<p>But what do you think? What makes a story epic for you &#8212; and distinguishes it from other forms of Fantasy?
