Recently, The Gathering Of The Lost<\/em><\/strong> was shortlisted for the David Gemmell Legend Award<\/a>, and as a finalist I was interviewed on a number of fora around the traps.<\/p>\n

I was asked a number of great questions so thought I\u2019d share a few of them\u2014plus my answers, of course!\u2014here on the blog over the next few weeks.<\/p>\n

Sharon Stogner, of the ismellsheep<\/a> genre site, asked a great question about what awards mean. Here it is:
\n.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Sharon:<\/strong> <\/span><\/em>The Heir of Night<\/span> … won the Gemmell Morningstar, and now <\/span><\/em>The Gathering of the Lost<\/span> has been nominated for the Gemmell Legend. How does this feel as an author? <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Helen:<\/strong> You know, I do sometimes reflect on the relationship between writing and awards and \u2018why they matter.\u2019 Arguably, at one level they don\u2019t, because the reason I write\u2014and I imagine it\u2019s pretty much the same for other authors\u2014is because of the delight of storytelling, and because the stories are just there \u201cin the air\u201d and demand to be told. And sometimes you get the occasional \u2018message in a bottle\u2019 that lets you know you have connected with a reader; that he or she loved your story, which is what it\u2019s all about.<\/span><\/p>\n

Yet when I found out I had won the Morningstar it was just such a buzz, not just knowing \u201cmy story\u201d had won an international award, but realizing people I had never met must have cared enough to vote for it.<\/span><\/p>\n

And because writing is essentially a very solitary occupation\u2013I sometimes refer to it as \u2018the loneliness of the long distance writer\u2019\u2014 winning an award like the Morningstar is a tremendous affirmation that you are, through those solitary scribblings, connecting with people around the planet. It\u2019s the \u2018message in a bottle\u2019 scaled up a hundredfold, which is amazingly motivational and humbling at one and the same time!…”<\/span><\/p>\n
