I read a huge number of books so to qualify a book really needs to standout in retrospect as well as being something I enjoy while reading. (That&#8217;s a much bigger list and needless to say there&#8217;s some very good books on it.) So here&#8217;s my top 6 picks so far, in alphabetical order by author:<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/WindupGirl.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-776\" title=\"WindupGirl\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/WindupGirl.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"117\" height=\"175\" \/><\/a>The Windup Girl<\/strong><\/em> by <strong>Paolo Bacigalupi<\/strong> &#8212; medium-future dystopian scifi that really hooked me in from the opening sequence<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Tigers-at-Awhitu-PD-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-391\" title=\"Tigers at Awhitu PD-1\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Tigers-at-Awhitu-PD-1-185x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"130\" height=\"210\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Tigers-at-Awhitu-PD-1-185x300.jpg 185w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Tigers-at-Awhitu-PD-1.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 130px) 100vw, 130px\" \/><\/a>Tigers at Awhitu <\/strong><\/em>by Sarah Broom &#8212; this accomplished and moving debut poetry collection made a great reading start to my year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Roomcropped.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1313\" title=\"Room,cropped\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Roomcropped.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"90\" height=\"136\" \/><\/a>Room<\/strong><\/em> by <strong>Emma Donoghue<\/strong> &#8212; a Booker shortlisted novel I didn&#8217;t expect to enjoy from the back cover, but by the end of Chapter 2 I didn&#8217;t want to put it down.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong> <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong> <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong> <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/treekeeper_tale_coverfinal.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-629  alignleft\" title=\"treekeeper_tale_coverfinal\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/treekeeper_tale_coverfinal-192x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"134\" height=\"210\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>The Treekeeper&#8217;s Tale <\/strong><\/em>by <strong>Pascale Petit<\/strong> &#8212; powerful poetry from celebrated UK poet, Pascale Petit, covering themes of nature and archaeology.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Immortal-Beloved1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2355\" title=\"Immortal Beloved\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Immortal-Beloved1-194x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"116\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Immortal-Beloved1-194x300.jpg 194w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Immortal-Beloved1.jpg 316w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 116px) 100vw, 116px\" \/><\/a>Immortal Beloved <\/strong><\/em>by<em><strong> <\/strong><\/em><strong>Cate Tiernan &#8212; <\/strong>a YA paranormal urban fantasy that is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">not<\/span> about vampires (despite the title.) I really enjoyed the characters\u00a0 and Tiernan&#8217;s use of (real) history in the backstory.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/TymonsFlight.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-731\" title=\"TymonsFlight\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/TymonsFlight-215x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"129\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/TymonsFlight-215x300.jpg 215w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/TymonsFlight-737x1024.jpg 737w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/TymonsFlight.jpg 1824w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 129px) 100vw, 129px\" \/><\/a>Tymon&#8217;s Flight<\/strong><\/em> by <strong>Mary Victoria<\/strong> &#8212; I love the concept of the &#8220;world tree&#8221; and the steampunk overtones with dirigibles and\u00a0 flying machines.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s not the end of the year yet, but reading Christchurch City Libraries&#8217; top picks yesterday made me think about the books that have been standout reads for me so far this year.
