Her winning &#8212; and first &#8212; collection, <i>The Summer King<\/i>, was then published by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.otago.ac.nz\/press\/\" target=\"_blank\">Otago University Press<\/a> in 2009, and won the <a href=\"http:\/\/asaliterature.com\/?page_id=14\">Mary Gilmore Award<\/a> for the best first poetry collection by an Australian author in 2010.<\/p>\n<p>The interview is an indepth look at Joanna and her poetry, as well as her new role as poetry editor for the literary journal, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.takahe.org.nz\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Takahe<\/a>, which is currently celebrating its 25th year in production.<a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Summer-King-The.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-20890\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Summer-King-The-101x150.jpg\" alt=\"Summer King, The\" width=\"101\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Summer-King-The-101x150.jpg 101w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Summer-King-The-202x300.jpg 202w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Summer-King-The.jpg 318w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 101px) 100vw, 101px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the interview&#8212;and very well worth your listening time, too:<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"http:\/\/www.radionz.co.nz\/audio\/player\/20145119\" target=\"_blank\">Sunday Morning Interview With Joanna Preston (Podcast)<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>As those of you who saw my recent feature of Joanna&#8217;s<a href=\"http:\/\/tuesdaypoem.blogspot.co.nz\/2014\/06\/lucifer-in-las-vegas-by-joanna-preston.html\" target=\"_blank\"><em> Lucifer In Las Vegas <\/em><\/a>on <a href=\"http:\/\/tuesdaypoem.blogspot.co.nz\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Tuesday Poem Blog<\/a> will know, I am a great admirer of Joanna&#8217;s poetry, and so was not at all surprised to hear Wallace Chapman describe <strong>The Summer King<\/strong> as &#8220;luminous&#8221;, &#8220;accessible&#8221; and &#8220;a page turner&#8221;&#8212;a rare accolade for poetry these days.<\/p>\n<p>There is a great deal more equally worthwhile listening in the interview, not least Joanna&#8217;s thoughts on poetry (and all creative writing by inference) as &#8220;negotating boundaries&#8221; and her eloquently expressed view that &#8220;all art is a collaboration&#8230;in which the creator must leave as much space as possible for the reader to bring their own [creative] input to the work&#8230;&#8221; (I have paraphrased as closely as possible to my recollection of what was said in the interview; my apologies to Joanna if I have not gotten it quite right.)<\/p>\n<p>I really recommend this interview&#8212;and not least for Joanna&#8217;s wonderful reading of <em>Parable of the Drought<\/em>, recently republished in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.randomhouse.co.nz\/books\/siobhan-harvey-harry-ricketts-and-james-norcliffe\/essential-new-zealand-poems-9781775534594.aspx\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Essential New Zealand Poems: Facing The Empty Page<\/strong><\/a> (ed. S.
