{"id":2666,"date":"2010-12-07T06:00:23","date_gmt":"2010-12-06T17:00:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/?p=2666"},"modified":"2010-12-07T20:56:38","modified_gmt":"2010-12-07T07:56:38","slug":"tuesday-poem-blue-by-barbara-mccartney-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2010\/12\/07\/tuesday-poem-blue-by-barbara-mccartney-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Tuesday Poem: &#8220;Blue&#8221; by Barbara McCartney"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><strong>Blue<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>on Capri the gondola<br \/>\nrides far above the sea<br \/>\nhangs in green between blue and blue<\/p>\n<p>below at the azure grotto<br \/>\nthe boatman grasps the chain<br \/>\nwe ride the surge<br \/>\ninto glowing pale blue<br \/>\nour small flotilla circles<br \/>\ncrosses the pool<br \/>\n(to bathe in this!)<\/p>\n<p>and in Mainz<br \/>\nthere&#8217;s an overflow of blue as<br \/>\nChagal&#8217;s windows<br \/>\nlight St Stephen&#8217;s<br \/>\na triptych of swirling leaves<br \/>\ntumble of angels<br \/>\nJacob Moses Elias<br \/>\nthe holy family<br \/>\nthe Christ<br \/>\nthe ancient ark adrift on blue<\/p>\n<p>and generations of high water marks<br \/>\non the walls of villages<br \/>\nalong the Rhein and Main<\/p>\n<p>and the grey Danube<\/p>\n<p>acqua alta &#8211; ma quanto alta?<\/p>\n<p>(c) Barbara McCartney<\/p>\n<p>Published in <em>Flap<\/em>: <em>The Chook Book 2<\/em>, (The Hen House) 2010<\/p>\n<pre>* \"acqua alta - ma quanto alta?\" translates as \"high water - but how high?\"\r\nAs seen\u00a0 on a safety leaflet from Venice.\r\n<\/pre>\n<p>&#8212;<\/p>\n<h4>About the Poem:<\/h4>\n<p>This is the fourth and final Tuesday Poem selection from the recently released<strong> <em>Flap: The Chook Book 2<\/em><\/strong> by Christchurch poets Victoria Broome, Catherine Fitchett, Barbara McCartney and Christina Stachurski. <em><strong>Blue <\/strong><\/em>is from Barbara\u2019s section of the anthology: <em>the distance from here to there. <\/em>I love the transition of &#8220;blues&#8221; through waterscapes in the poem, and also the way this work complements Catherine&#8217;s <em><strong>Blue<\/strong><\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2010\/11\/30\/tuesday-poem-blue-by-catherine-fitchett\/\">last week<\/a><em>&#8212;<\/em>with Barbara&#8217;s\u00a0<em><strong><\/strong><\/em>poem making the return journey to Europe, again by water, while nonetheless remaining an odyssey recorded in shades of blue.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>About Barbara:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Barbara wrote poetry as a child\u00a0and started again about ten years ago,     and has since been published in <em>Poetry NZ, North and South       Magazine, The Press<\/em> (Christchurch), and\u00a0<em>Takahe<\/em> magazine.\u00a0 Barbara is one of the Poetry Chooks who have just published their second anthology, <em><strong>Flap: the Chook Book 2<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 She likes poems to have more than one level of     meaning\/interpretation, and is usually pretty severe in editing her     own and others&#8217; work.\u00a0 She think a poem needs to be polished (as a     jewel is), so that its essence\u00a0is\u00a0untrammelled by\u00a0extraneous     matter.
