{"id":26682,"date":"2014-09-01T06:30:45","date_gmt":"2014-08-31T18:30:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/?p=26682"},"modified":"2014-09-01T09:58:16","modified_gmt":"2014-08-31T21:58:16","slug":"supernaturally-was-super","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2014\/09\/01\/supernaturally-was-super\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Supernaturally&#8221; Was Super!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Well, it&#8217;s all over&#8230; The captains and the kings have departed, the shouting and tumult died away&#8212;but while it lasted, the WORD Christchurch Writers &amp; Readers&#8217; festival was all go.<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t get to participate anywhere near as much as I would have liked, but I did get to chair\/compere the &#8220;Supernaturally&#8221; event with Laini Taylor and Elizabeth Knox&#8212;and since these authors are both lively speakers, it was a lot of fun.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_26684\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Supernaturally.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26684\" class=\"wp-image-26684 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Supernaturally.jpg\" alt=\"Supernaturally\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Supernaturally.jpg 600w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Supernaturally-150x112.jpg 150w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Supernaturally-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-26684\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">L-R: Laini, Elizabeth, myself<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As I told the audience, I had &#8220;eleventy-one&#8221; questions prepared (&#8220;just in case&#8221;: spot the belt and braces gal here!) But the conversation between Elizabeth and Laini quickly found a life of its own, covering\u00a0 a range of topics from why the &#8220;supernatural&#8221; sparks for them in writing fiction, through how they approach their storytelling (hint: discovery, not planning), to writing strong women characters, and the importance of romantic elements in contemporary YA&#8212;to name just a few of the matters traversed.<\/p>\n<p>The observation that most resonated for me came in response to a question at the end, when Laini Taylor said that writing takes at least 100% of what you have to give&#8230; Ay, I thought: true dat!<\/p>\n<p>And echoed the thought a moment later when Elizabeth Knox reminded us all that our writing also needs to be fun.<\/p>\n<p>Overall,\u00a0 a thoroughly enjoyable session.
