‘ “Strange things happen in\u00a0this world,” Haruki Murakami says. “You don’t know why, but they happen.” <\/span>

\n<\/em><\/p>\n

\"Wind-up<\/a>The interview is wide-ranging, but the parts that really resonated for me were when Murakami spoke about the writing process. Here are a few examples :<\/p>\n

‘ “I like to write. I like to\u00a0choose the right word, I\u00a0like to write the right sentence… in the right place. That kind of engineering is exhausting, though: a daily trip to the “basement of the mind” and back up again. “…You have to dedicate yourself to that work. You have no extra space to do something else.” ‘<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Also:<\/p>\n

‘ “I\u00a0take time to rewrite,” he explains. “Rewriting is my favourite part of\u00a0writing. The first time is a kind of torture, sometimes. Raymond Carver [whose work Murakami has translated into Japanese] said\u00a0the same thing. I\u00a0met him and I\u00a0talked with him in 1983\u00a0or 84, and he said:\u00a0‘The first draft is kind of torture, but when you rewrite it’s getting better, so\u00a0you are happy…” ‘<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

And this:<\/p>\n

‘ “I\u00a0don’t like deadlines \u2026when\u00a0it’s finished, it’s finished. But\u00a0before then, it is not finished.” ‘<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

No doubt other parts of the interview may resonate for you, but when I read these sections in particular I thought: Yup, I hear you!<\/p>\n
