{"id":27151,"date":"2014-10-28T06:30:24","date_gmt":"2014-10-27T17:30:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/?p=27151"},"modified":"2014-10-27T19:40:15","modified_gmt":"2014-10-27T06:40:15","slug":"the-tuesday-poem-refeaturing-siobhan-harvey-van-gogh-in-aotearoa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2014\/10\/28\/the-tuesday-poem-refeaturing-siobhan-harvey-van-gogh-in-aotearoa\/","title":{"rendered":"The Tuesday Poem: Refeaturing Siobhan Harvey &#038; &#8220;Van Gogh In Aotearoa&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Van Gogh in Aotearoa<\/h3>\n<p>The spirit is alive<br \/>\nin <em>Starry Night<\/em> reproductions<br \/>\nwhich hang, like crucifixes,<br \/>\nin varsity bed-sits,<br \/>\n<em>petit bourgeois<\/em> do-ups<br \/>\nand <em>nouveau riche<\/em> villas<br \/>\nacross Aotearoa.<\/p>\n<p>In such replicas, he\u2019s reborn,<br \/>\npicks up his paintbrushes<br \/>\nand begins to set the All Blacks:<br \/>\nMcCaw, Howlett, So\u2019oialo,<br \/>\nupon the terra firma of his canvas<br \/>\nas if they\u2019re men at work, harvesting.<\/p>\n<p>Then, he finds his Arles in Akaroa,<br \/>\nwhere Port Louis-Philippe\u2019s spectre<br \/>\nbesets him with visions,<br \/>\nsmall prophecies, of fresh work:<br \/>\n<em>Landscape under a Summer Sky,<br \/>\nThe Rue Jolie Bridge at Akaroa,<br \/>\nThree White Cottages in Rue Balguerie.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Soon, forgetting sunflowers,<br \/>\nhe forms a fresh muse<br \/>\nfrom the <em>soleil<\/em>-radiance<br \/>\nof kaka-beak and kowhai.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, like Rangi and Papa,<br \/>\nhe brings land and sky together<br \/>\nin a blue-black darkness<br \/>\nabove the Desert Road<br \/>\nwhere stars are birthed so crisply<br \/>\nthey stand in place of him<br \/>\nand speak of things long dead.<\/p>\n<p>(c) Siobhan Harvey<\/p>\n<p>Reproduced here with the permission of the poet.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014<\/p>\n<p>Fine poems should be read and heard more than once, so I\u2019m continuing with my series of relooking at poets who have had multiple poems featured here on <em>\u201c\u2026Anything, Really\u201d<\/em> since I joined the Tuesday Poem community in June 2010. Her other awards include\u00a0runner up in the 2014 New Zealand Poetry Society&#8217;s International Poetry Competition,\u00a0runner up in 2012 Dorothy Porter Poetry Prize (Aus) and\u00a0runner up in 2012 Kevin Ireland Poetry Competition. Her work has recently been published in <em>Books Unbound<\/em>, <em>Evergreen Review<\/em>, <em>Pilgrimage<\/em> (Colorado State University Press), <em>Segue<\/em> (Miami University Press), <em>Stand<\/em> (UK), <em>Structo<\/em> (UK) and the New Zealand Poetry Society 2014 anthology, <em>Taking Back the Sky<\/em>. Her creative nonfiction has been published in magazines in New Zealand and America, and\u00a0is a finalist in the 2014 Landfall Essay Prize, as well as being Highly Commended in 2013 Landfall Essay Prize, and runner-up in 2011 Landfall Essay Prize.\u00a0Between 2006 and 2013, Harvey co-ordinated New Zealand&#8217;s National Poetry Day.
