{"id":27269,"date":"2014-11-13T06:30:49","date_gmt":"2014-11-12T17:30:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/?p=27269"},"modified":"2014-11-11T19:49:40","modified_gmt":"2014-11-11T06:49:40","slug":"random-reflections-on-story-storytelling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2014\/11\/13\/random-reflections-on-story-storytelling\/","title":{"rendered":"Random Reflections On Story &#038; Storytelling"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2014\/10\/26\/looking-back-looking-ahead\/\" target=\"_blank\">couple of weeks back<\/a>, I threatened to post on <em>&#8220;whether \u201cstory\u201d is greater than the sum of its constituent \u201ccraft\u201d parts\u2026&#8221;<\/em> in the near future.<\/p>\n<p>Today is that day. \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<p>For me, story is <em>the<\/em> thing, before which all other aspects of the writing life must bow down&#8212;including me, when I&#8217;m writing, i.e. the integrity of the story is paramount (&#8216;in my book&#8217;&#8212;ha!)<\/p>\n<p>In my &#8216;umble view,\u00a0 I feel that one can labour over plot and subtext, character development, structure and pacing, beginnings and endings\u2014yet still not have a story worth reading at the end of it.<\/p>\n<p>Conversely, deficiencies in any one of those constituent areas can be overlooked if the storytelling rocks, i.e. as a reader you&#8217;re so absorbed in the tale being told you don&#8217;t notice flaws of craft. (Think of all those books that are bestsellers but someone will tell you that they are terribly written&#8212;by which they mean crafted&#8212;either in whole or in part.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2014\/11\/13\/random-reflections-on-story-storytelling\/steering-the-craft\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-27272\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-27272\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Steering-The-Craft-96x150.jpg\" alt=\"Steering The Craft\" width=\"96\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Steering-The-Craft-96x150.jpg 96w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Steering-The-Craft-193x300.jpg 193w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Steering-The-Craft.jpg 307w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 96px) 100vw, 96px\" \/><\/a>One of my favourite writing quotes belongs to Ursula Le Guin, from her book on writing titled <strong>\u201cSteering the Craft\u201d:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201c\u2026the story boat is a magic one. It knows its course. The job of the person at the the helm is to help it to find its own way to wherever it\u2019s going.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Again, the implication is that \u201cstory\u201d is something greater than the component parts of \u201ccraft.\u201d I would say that Story is the forest&#8212;Edelman&#8217;s rainforest, perhaps,<em>&#8220;teeming with growth, decay, competition, diversity and selection&#8221;&#8212;<\/em>whereas the various aspects of craft comprise the individual trees within it.<\/p>\n<p>As writers, practicing craft <em>can<\/em> definitely help us tell our stories better, but if we focus too much on the constituent parts, I believe we risk missing the big picture: we can\u2019t see the overall forest because we have our noses pressed slap bang up against the single tree trunk immediately in front of us.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2014\/11\/13\/random-reflections-on-story-storytelling\/writing-poems\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-27273\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-27273\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Writing-Poems-97x150.jpg\" alt=\"Writing Poems\" width=\"97\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Writing-Poems-97x150.jpg 97w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Writing-Poems-194x300.jpg 194w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Writing-Poems.jpg 224w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 97px) 100vw, 97px\" \/><\/a>And the very best way to find practice storytelling and thereby find our rainforest? Why, we must write of course&#8212;write, and write, and write. Then write some more. And when we&#8217;re not writing we must read, because to <em>tell<\/em> story well ourselves, we must absorb it and understand its nuances&#8212;and that means reading other writers, because otherwise we\u2019re writing in the dark.
