Here&#8217;s why:<\/p>\n<p>On page 59, the main character, Mori, states that, <span style=\"color: #000080;\"><em>&#8220;Interlibrary loans are a wonder of the world and a glory of civilization.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Hear, hear! In fact, libraries are a glory of civilization, in my humble option&#8212;so you may see why the story is already &#8220;speaking&#8221; to me. \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13740\" style=\"width: 275px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2012\/05\/20\/fun-with-food-2\/fun-with-food-001a\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-13740\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13740\" class=\" wp-image-13740\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Fun-with-Food-001a-300x171.jpg\" alt=\"Like Clarissa, in 'Mrs Dalloway', I bought the flowers myself--amongst other things!\" width=\"265\" height=\"151\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Fun-with-Food-001a-300x171.jpg 300w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Fun-with-Food-001a-150x85.jpg 150w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Fun-with-Food-001a.jpg 553w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 265px) 100vw, 265px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-13740\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The alchemy of food&#8230;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Then on page 91, Mori reflects on the alchemy of food:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><em>&#8220;It was lovely to be cooking with actual food. There&#8217;s something so grounding about it. It&#8217;s not that I was doing any magic, beyond the magic it is to take big flat mushrooms and raw potatoes and turn them into something delicious. I was just making dinner. But I wonder how much of cooking for someone else is magic anyway, more than I know about.
