Currently, I\u2019m taking a word that means either a \u201cbad guy\u201d, e.g. ruffian or rogue, or a \u201crough diamond\u201d, such as\u00a0 a roughneck, and matching it with a character from my novels.<\/p>\n

As in the A Geography Of Haarth<\/a> series, each entry is accompanied by a relevant passage from the books, which could be drawn from one of the two Wall Of Night series<\/a> novels currently published, or my Kids\/YA standalone, Thornspell<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n

The definitions are taken from Merriam Webster Online, my current go-to dictionary when writing<\/p>\n

\u2014<\/p>\n

Nemesis:<\/strong>\u00a0 an opponent or enemy that is very difficult to defeat<\/span><\/p>\n

I just had to include the “nemesis” as a homage to Buffy<\/strong>, particularly Season 6 where the singularly inept trio of villains refer to themselves as the “nemesises.” \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n

Today’s “nemesis”\u00a0 is of a slightly different order.<\/p>\n

Nirn:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNo?\u201d Emuun was silent, his eyes half closed. Then they opened again. \u201cSpeaking of dead heralds, I see your adept, Jharin, has abandoned the last face he was wearing.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Nirn’s chill eyes considered him. \u201cAs it happens, the face abandoned him. He could not hold it, even through last night.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Emuun whistled again. \u201cThere must be more to these couriers than I thought. A power to resist, perhaps, rather than to attack or coerce?\u201d He shrugged. \u201cAlthough I was surprised\u2014for all the screams and agony that delighted our assassin allies\u2014when even your mindflaying could not break the Ishnapuri pair.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhich should not have been possible!\u201d Nirn snapped. He took a few hasty steps up and down the room. \u201cThere was always a kernel of resistance, no matter the subtlety or sheer brute strength of my work. No one knows the mindflaying better than I, yet still they escaped, slipping into death before I was done with them.\u201d<\/em> <\/span><\/p>\n
