Currently, I\u2019m taking a word for some sort of \u201cbad guy\u201d, e.g. ruffian or rogue, or alternatively a \u201crough diamond\u201d, such as\u00a0 a roughneck, and matching it with a character from my novels.<\/p>\n

As in the A Geography Of Haarth<\/a> series, each entry is accompanied by a relevant passage from the books, which could be drawn from one of the two Wall Of Night series<\/a> novels currently published, or my Kids\/YA standalone, Thornspell<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n

The definitions are taken from Merriam Webster Online, my current go-to dictionary when writing<\/p>\n

Bully:\u00a0<\/strong> a blustering, browbeating person<\/span>:<\/strong> one habitually cruel to others who are weaker<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

I’ve been trying for some time to think of the right descriptor for the character, Flor<\/strong>, in Thornspell<\/em><\/strong><\/a> — but as soon as I juxtaposed his name with “bully”, I knew I’d found the right word. Both aspects of bullying define his character at different times, but this passage focuses on\u00a0 the second aspect: “one habitually cruel to others who are weaker<\/span>.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Balisan frowned when Sigismund told him about the door opening into the herb garden, and the narrow path <\/em><\/span>between the palace walls. \u201cThis place is a warren,\u201d he said, but seemed unconcerned when Sigismund mentioned the <\/em><\/span>presence of the serving girl.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

It was Flor who raised the subject again. He and Sigismund were sorting through their weapons for the <\/em><\/span>hunt, and Flor had picked up a heavy bladed dagger, turning it this way and that to the light. \u201cAbout that dumb <\/em><\/span>wench,\u201d he said abruptly, \u201cthe one in the garden earlier…You can\u2019t just have servants coming and going as they <\/em><\/span>please in gardens used by the high nobility. The wench needs a lesson, to remind her to keep to her place.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI think,\u201d Sigismund said, keeping his voice level, \u201cthat’s for me to decide.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

The dark blue eyes widened. \u201cSurely you\u2019re not angry…the girl\u2019s just a serving trollop. She\u2019ll be thick skinned as well as thick headed.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Sigismund shook his head. \u201cI think you should let me decide when…one of my servants needs to be punished.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Flor slammed the dagger back into its sheath. “\u201cI can\u2019t believe you\u2019re taking this wench\u2019s part against me!\u201d he said.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n
