{"id":28715,"date":"2015-04-07T06:30:34","date_gmt":"2015-04-06T18:30:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/?p=28715"},"modified":"2015-04-04T18:38:06","modified_gmt":"2015-04-04T05:38:06","slug":"the-tuesday-poem-an-anzac-poem-by-jessie-pope-1868-1941","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2015\/04\/07\/the-tuesday-poem-an-anzac-poem-by-jessie-pope-1868-1941\/","title":{"rendered":"The Tuesday Poem: An ANZAC Poem By Jessie Pope, 1868-1941"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Why do we cheer those brown-faced boys with pride,<br \/>\nWhy do dense crowds press round on every side,<br \/>\nWhy do we throw them flowers, our hearts aglow?<br \/>\nWell\u2014turn a minute to three years ago.<\/p>\n<p>A moonlit beach\u2014a cliff of scrub and bush\u2014<br \/>\nThe creeping, crowded boats\u2014a breathless hush\u2014,<br \/>\nA cranch of keels \u2014a leap, a shallow splash\u2014<br \/>\nAnd then Inferno, thunder, blaze and crash.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStraight as a bayonet\u201d\u2014riddled where they fell;<br \/>\nHacking the wire, across that strip of Hell;<br \/>\nThose untried heroes\u2014husky and blood-drenched\u2014<br \/>\nHurled back the Turkish outposts \u2014and entrenched!<\/p>\n<p>The thing that was impossible was done!<br \/>\nFrom the beginning thus have Britons won.<br \/>\nSo, year by year, in words of fire and gold,<br \/>\nThe Anzacs\u2019 glorious landing shall be told.<\/p>\n<p>by Jessie Pope, 1868-1941<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<\/p>\n<p>With this April marking the centenary of ANZAC participation in the invasion of Gallipoli in World War One I shall be featuring poetry on the theme of war and its consequences throughout the coming month.<\/p>\n<p>Jessie Pope was a well-known English writer of the pre-WW1 and WW1 period who wrote a number of poems during the war period, lauding the ANZAC soldiers.
