There they are given showers and new clothes before being blindfolded and driven to a nondescript basement where they&#8217;re promised something amazing is waiting for them.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s there that Maggie (Brit Marling) introduces herself. Shrouded in white and suffering from an unspecified illness, she claims she&#8217;s from the year 2054, having journeyed back in time from a post-apocalyptic future. Now she&#8217;s recruiting followers to prepare for the social upheaval that&#8217;s still to come.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2015\/05\/06\/big-worlds-on-small-screens-fantasysci-fi-films-youve-probably-never-heard-of-rebecca-fisher-discusses-sound-of-my-voice\/soundofmyvoice1\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-28952\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-28952\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/SoundOfMyVoice1.jpg\" alt=\"SoundOfMyVoice1\" width=\"302\" height=\"403\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/SoundOfMyVoice1.jpg 350w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/SoundOfMyVoice1-112x150.jpg 112w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/SoundOfMyVoice1-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 302px) 100vw, 302px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As it happens, novices Peter and Lorna (Christopher Denham and Nicole Vicius) are investigative journalists accumulating information for a documentary on underground cults \u2013 and they&#8217;re out to expose Maggie as a fraud. At least at first.<\/p>\n<p>Despite his initial scepticism, Peter finds himself drawn to Maggie&#8217;s charisma and conviction. This does not go unnoticed by Lorna, who begins to wonder whether he&#8217;s been duped into believing Maggie&#8217;s strange but compelling story. Things come to a head when Peter begins to seriously consider the request Maggie has made of him: to bring her a child from the elementary school where he teaches.<\/p>\n<p>To do so would amount to kidnapping. But Maggie gives a compelling reason as to why she wants to meet this particular child, and by now Peter may be in too deep&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2015\/05\/06\/big-worlds-on-small-screens-fantasysci-fi-films-youve-probably-never-heard-of-rebecca-fisher-discusses-sound-of-my-voice\/sound-of-my-voice\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-28953\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-28953\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/SoundOfMyVoice2.jpg\" alt=\"Sound of My Voice\" width=\"460\" height=\"276\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/SoundOfMyVoice2.jpg 460w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/SoundOfMyVoice2-150x90.jpg 150w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/SoundOfMyVoice2-300x180.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 460px) 100vw, 460px\" \/><\/a><em>Maggie starts to break down Peter&#8217;s defences<\/em><\/p>\n<p>As with <strong>Safety Not Guaranteed<\/strong>, the film introduces an outlandish premise only to ask: &#8220;is this for real?&#8221; though it&#8217;s ultimately less interested in the answer as it is in the characters&#8217; response to the question. And like <strong>Another Earth<\/strong>, it&#8217;s not afraid to leave those questions unanswered, leaving the audience to ponder what it decides not to explain.<\/p>\n<p>But whereas <strong>Another Earth<\/strong> had enough focus on the rules of the sci-fi premise to give the audience a fair shot at filling in the blanks with their own imagination, <strong>Sound of My Voice<\/strong> has a setup that is considerably vaguer, filled with contradictory exposition and scenes that are cut short before pertinent information is given.<\/p>\n<p>So although it&#8217;s compelling and suspenseful, with a performance from Brit Marling that will keep you guessing as to Maggie&#8217;s true intentions, prepare yourself for an ambiguous final scene.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2015\/05\/06\/big-worlds-on-small-screens-fantasysci-fi-films-youve-probably-never-heard-of-rebecca-fisher-discusses-sound-of-my-voice\/soundofmyvoice3\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-28954\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-28954\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/SoundOfMyVoice3-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"SoundOfMyVoice3\" width=\"471\" height=\"265\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/SoundOfMyVoice3-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/SoundOfMyVoice3-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/SoundOfMyVoice3-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/SoundOfMyVoice3.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 471px) 100vw, 471px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Ambiguity abounds&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Sound of My Voice<\/strong> is less of a science-fiction film than a psychological thriller, but I&#8217;ve squeezed it in due to the potential time-travelling element, and the subtle developments that suggest Maggie&#8217;s story just might have some veracity to it. It&#8217;s worth a watch for its intriguing premise and exploration into the cult of personality, an individual&#8217;s desperate desire to believe, and the unpredictable nature of those around you.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Next Time: The Polar Bear King<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The old Norwegian folktale <strong>East O&#8217; The Sun and West O&#8217; The Moon<\/strong> is ripe for adaptation, but oddly enough has very few filmic versions to its name.
