Nonetheless, it probably comes as no surprise to you that I love fairytale retellings.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2015\/05\/14\/a-few-fairytale-retellings-ive-enjoyed\/beauty_robinmckinley\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-29043\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-29043\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Beauty_RobinMcKinley-99x150.jpg\" alt=\"Beauty_RobinMcKinley\" width=\"99\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Beauty_RobinMcKinley-99x150.jpg 99w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Beauty_RobinMcKinley-197x300.jpg 197w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Beauty_RobinMcKinley.jpg 263w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 99px) 100vw, 99px\" \/><\/a>A few of my favourites include Robin McKinley&#8217;s <em><strong>Beauty<\/strong><\/em> (Beauty and The Beast), which has the distinction of being one of the first fairytale retellings I encountered and remains a firm favourite \u2013 although her <strong><em>Deerskin<\/em> <\/strong>(adapting the traditional Donkeyskin) is also a powerful and compelling read.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2015\/05\/14\/a-few-fairytale-retellings-ive-enjoyed\/the-godmother\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-29045\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-29045\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/The-Godmother-97x150.jpg\" alt=\"The Godmother\" width=\"97\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/The-Godmother-97x150.jpg 97w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/The-Godmother-195x300.jpg 195w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/The-Godmother.jpg 308w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 97px) 100vw, 97px\" \/><\/a>Another longstanding favourite is Elizabeth Ann Scarborough&#8217;s <em><strong>The Godmother <\/strong><\/em>draws on an array of fairytales, including Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, and Hansel and Gretel, to name just a few &#8212; a wonderful read.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2015\/05\/14\/a-few-fairytale-retellings-ive-enjoyed\/ash_malindalo_500-200x304-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-29046\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-29046 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/ash_malindalo_500-200x304-99x150.jpg\" alt=\"ash_malindalo_500-200x304\" width=\"99\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/ash_malindalo_500-200x304-99x150.jpg 99w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/ash_malindalo_500-200x304-197x300.jpg 197w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/ash_malindalo_500-200x304.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 99px) 100vw, 99px\" \/><\/a>Other more recently enjoyed reads include Juliet Marillier&#8217;s <em><strong>Wildwood Dancing<\/strong><\/em>, (The Twelve Dancing Princesses), Malinda Lo&#8217;s <strong><em>Ash<\/em> (<\/strong>Cinderella) and Grace Lin&#8217;s <strong><em>Where The Mountains Meets The Moon<\/em>,<\/strong> which draws on Chinese folklore in a Junior fiction retelling.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2013\/12\/23\/what-im-reading-maggie-stiefvaters-the-raven-boys\/raven-boys\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-23538\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-23538\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Raven-Boys-98x150.jpg\" alt=\"Raven Boys\" width=\"98\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Alan Garner&#8217;s <em><strong>The Owl Service <\/strong><\/em>is an eerie retelling of the Celtic fairytale \/ myth of Blodeuwedd from the Mabinogion \u2013 but I suspect Maggie Stiefvater may be drawing on the same tale for part of her new <strong>The Raven Boys <\/strong>series, which I&#8217;m also very much enjoying. (Although it&#8217;s yet to be completed so I may be proven completely wrong regarding Blodeuwedd!)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2014\/06\/09\/when-genre-intersects-classical-literature-myth-on-sf-signal\/eight-days-of-luke\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-25887\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-25887\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Eight-Days-Of-Luke-97x150.jpg\" alt=\"Eight Days Of Luke\" width=\"97\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Eight-Days-Of-Luke-97x150.jpg 97w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Eight-Days-Of-Luke.jpeg 128w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 97px) 100vw, 97px\" \/><\/a>I have also always loved Diana Wynne Jones&#8217;s retelling of the story of Brunnhilde and Siegfried in <em><strong>Eight Days of Luke<\/strong><\/em>. Perhaps I am interpreting &#8220;fairytale&#8221; too broadly here since both the Mabinogion and the tale of Brunnhilde and Siegfired may be counted as myth \u2013 but if so it is the same blending that infuses <strong><em>Thornspell<\/em><\/strong>, where I have worked the Arthurian cycle into the fairytale retelling.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2013\/04\/03\/great-fantasy-courtships-intercedents-masks-gifts-choices-magic-on-the-supernatural-underground\/everafter2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-19914\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-19914\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/EverAfter2-105x150.jpg\" alt=\"EverAfter2\" width=\"105\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/EverAfter2-105x150.jpg 105w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/EverAfter2.jpeg 188w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 105px) 100vw, 105px\" \/><\/a>Stepping away from novels briefly, I very much enjoyed Juliet Marillier&#8217;s short story <em>By Bonelight <\/em>(published in the collection <strong><em>Prickle Moon<\/em><\/strong>), a retelling of the Russian Baba Yaga fairytale that won both the Aurealis and Sir Julius Vogel Awards.
