{"id":29049,"date":"2015-05-14T06:30:31","date_gmt":"2015-05-13T18:30:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/?p=29049"},"modified":"2015-05-12T21:17:17","modified_gmt":"2015-05-12T09:17:17","slug":"magic-in-the-wall-of-night-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2015\/05\/14\/magic-in-the-wall-of-night-world\/","title":{"rendered":"Magic In &#8220;The Wall Of Night&#8221; World"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A few years back, Seregil of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.risingshadow.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">RisingShadow<\/a> site asked me for a guest post on magic in my Wall Of Night series &#8212; which no one had asked me about before, or since, so I thought it was time I shared the magic again with you today. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Magic In &#8220;The Wall Of Night&#8221; World<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2014\/05\/08\/what-im-doing-right-now\/heirofnightcover_small\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-11809\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-11809\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/heirofnightcover_small.jpg\" alt=\"heirofnightcover_small\" width=\"140\" height=\"202\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/heirofnightcover_small.jpg 140w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/heirofnightcover_small-103x150.jpg 103w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 140px) 100vw, 140px\" \/><\/a>When Robin Hobb provided a cover quote for <em>The Heir Of Night<\/em>, the first novel in <a style=\"color: #000080;\" title=\"http:\/\/www.helenlowe.info\/wallofnight.html\" href=\"http:\/\/www.helenlowe.info\/wallofnight.html\" target=\"_blank\">The Wall Of Night<\/a> series, she spoke of <em>&#8220;A richly told tale of strange magic&#8230;&#8221;<\/em> That focus felt right, because for me, to be Fantasy there must be at least a glimmering of magic \u2013 but the Wall of Night series is absolutely <em>full<\/em> of magic, and some of it is indeed exceedingly strange.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">I\u2019m not sure though that it qualifies as a \u201csystem\u201d in the Brandon Sanderson sense of the word, or even so much as <a href=\"http:\/\/courtneyschafer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Courtney Schafer\u2019s<\/a> <strong>Shattered Sigil<\/strong> series.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The magic of the Wall of Night universe is chaotic, natural, and diverse. There may, however, be some method in the magic, so let\u2019s take a closer look.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2014\/05\/08\/what-im-doing-right-now\/heirofnight-aunz-cover\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-11802\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-11802\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/heirofnight-aunz-cover.jpg\" alt=\"heirofnight-aunz-cover\" width=\"153\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/heirofnight-aunz-cover.jpg 191w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/heirofnight-aunz-cover-95x150.jpg 95w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 153px) 100vw, 153px\" \/><\/a>The Magic Of The Derai<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Firstly, there\u2019s the magic of the Derai Alliance and their ancient enemy the Swarm, both of whom are alien to the world of Haarth on which they now find themselves. The magic of the Derai falls into four main areas: the Golden Fire, which comprised entities, yet was also a power source, but at the time the story opens is believed extinct; the Blood, who are those Derai that are both strongest in magic and traditionally most closely aligned with the Golden Fire; dream magic; and the magic of the gods, which chiefly takes the form of prophecy and artefacts, such as black blades and the three legendary weapons of the Derai\u2019s greatest hero.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The magic of the Blood and the Derai\u2019s lesser adepts covers a range of forms, including the ability to command objects and forces, both natural and physical; understanding the speech of beasts and birds; acute eyesight and hearing, including seeing in the dark and hearing outside normal human range; the chameleon ability to blend into surrounding materials and elements; dreaming; an empathic spirit bond; farseeing and foreseeing; fire calling; illusion working; mindspeaking; mind- and spiritwalking; psychic shielding; prophecy; seeking; truthsaying; and weatherworking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2011\/12\/31\/the-best-of-on-anything-really-2011-my-personal-highlights\/heirofnight_no-foil-indd-4\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10756\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-10756\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Heir-of-Night-UK-front-cover-201x300.jpg\" alt=\"HeirOfNight_no foil.indd\" width=\"159\" height=\"237\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Heir-of-Night-UK-front-cover-201x300.jpg 201w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Heir-of-Night-UK-front-cover-100x150.jpg 100w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Heir-of-Night-UK-front-cover-686x1024.jpg 686w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Heir-of-Night-UK-front-cover.jpg 1833w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 159px) 100vw, 159px\" \/><\/a>When written down like that you might be forgiven for thinking it\u2019s a melange \u2013 and I did own up to \u2018chaotic\u2019 and \u2018diverse\u2019 \u2013 but the common element is that the magic has a natural base in the wielder \/ user, so an important limitation is the user\u2019s physical endurance and psychic strength. Traditionally that limitation was enhanced by the bond to the Golden Fire, so the loss of the Fire represents a major diminution in the power of the Derai.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Dream Magic<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Dream magic merits a section in its own right, because although it is one of the forms associated with the Derai it also accesses the Gate of Dreams, which is both a realm in its own right and opens up access to other planes of existence. As is the way with dreams, the workings of this realm may be chaotic, jumbled and mysterious, but can also be clear. The Gate of Dreams is closely associated with portent: truth may be discerned here, but it is equally likely that foretelling may only imperfectly reflect events in the waking or \u201cdaylight\u201d world. Nothing is certain&#8230;and every action a protagonist takes acts on the dream realm, creating alternative possibilities of fulfilment. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2012\/01\/12\/the-gathering-of-the-lost-cover-uk-revealed-now-on-orbit\/gatheringoflost-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10984\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-10984\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/GatheringofLost-2-196x300.jpg\" alt=\"GatheringofLost (2)\" width=\"154\" height=\"236\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/GatheringofLost-2-196x300.jpg 196w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/GatheringofLost-2-98x150.jpg 98w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/GatheringofLost-2-669x1024.jpg 669w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/GatheringofLost-2.jpg 867w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 154px) 100vw, 154px\" \/><\/a>To further compound the mystery, the Gate of Dreams has its own denizens, including a long-dead hero who has been promised that her successor will not have to stand alone; the Huntmaster, who may not be more powerful than the hero, but is <em>\u201colder&#8230;and much, much darker\u201d<\/em>; and a ghost that guards a cavern of sleepers and holds the key to a millennia-old riddle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Very strange magic indeed!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>The Magic of Haarth<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">One of the interesting elements of The Wall of Night series is that the Derai and the Swarm have always been the only players in the magic game \u2013 until now, on the world of Haarth, which has magic of its own. The story\u2019s main protagonists, Malian and Kalan, are Derai, and only beginning to discover the magic of Haarth. What they have learned is that some elements are similar to their own powers: for example, Haarth magic uses can access the Gate of Dreams. There is a deeper magic, however, which is tied to the world itself \u2013 what Malian calls a green magic and thinks of as the song of Haarth. She is even beginning to suspect that the world itself may be sentient, although that is not yet certain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2012\/03\/30\/the-gathering-of-the-lost-has-its-first-us-review\/gatheringofthelostt-mm-c\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-12626\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-12626\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/GatheringoftheLostt-mm-c-186x300.jpg\" alt=\"GatheringoftheLostt mm c\" width=\"140\" height=\"226\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/GatheringoftheLostt-mm-c-186x300.jpg 186w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/GatheringoftheLostt-mm-c-93x150.jpg 93w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/GatheringoftheLostt-mm-c-636x1024.jpg 636w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/GatheringoftheLostt-mm-c.jpg 1258w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 140px) 100vw, 140px\" \/><\/a>This deeper magic also weaves together the magic of the natural world with the power of the three gods of Haarth \u2013 a magic that can take older, darker forms, such as the entities that walk during the dark of the moon, or the blood magic practiced in the land of Jhaine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">So there you have it: gods and ghosts and heroes, dream realms and blood and artefacts of power, mystery, mythology and more than a hint of chaos. I suspect that does add up to Robin Hobb\u2019s \u201cstrange magic\u201d, with just enough method in the leaven to allow pretensions to being a magic <em>system<\/em> as well&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The Magic of The Swarm<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Malian\u2019s knowledge of that has also been evolving, but as understanding its nature lies at the heart of the conflict between the Derai and the Swarm, as well as its final resolution,\u00a0 to say any more at this point would be a major spoiler.
