The recent unveiling of the US<\/a>\u00a0 and UK<\/a> covers for Daughter Of Blood<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014 and now the new look US covers<\/a> for the whole WALL of Night<\/a> series \u2014 has inspired me to spend some on-blog time with the characters from the first two books in the series, in the same way I spent time on the worldbuilding in A Geography Of Haarth<\/a>.<\/p>\n

I also decided to focus on minor players to begin with, because: \u201cI think it\u2019s the presence of the smaller characters that \u201cmakes\u201d a story, creating texture around the main points of view.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Although, personally, I do think it’s questionable whether Garan really qualifies as a “minor character.” He is, after all, in all<\/em> the books—which “technically” may qualify as a “spoiler” for Daughter of Blood<\/em><\/strong>, but since he’s been in both the The Heir of Night<\/em> <\/a>and The Gathering of the Lost<\/em><\/a>, I suspect it’s more a case of “go figure!”<\/p>\n

Anyway, here are HEIR and<\/em> GATHERING excerpts, just to add to Garan’s consequence. \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n

“…the two priests retained their cautious station down the hall. Their faces had remained expressionless throughout, but the young woman was flying two spots of color high in her cheeks. Teron’s belligerent stare shifted back to them. “I still say they shouldn’t be here,” he said loudly.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Garan’s amused expression did not change, but there was a warning note in his voice. “Captain’s orders, young Teron, which means yours too. So pipe down like a good lad, else I’ll have to send you packing.”<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cJust what we need,\u201d said Garan. \u201cA coterie of Stone priests.\u201d He had led his company out of the Barren Hills just on dusk, intending to camp overnight by the Border Mark, only to find another group of travelers already settled in by the standing stone. And not just any travelers, Garan thought with an inward groan. Stone priests were the nearest thing to a warrior class within the three priestly Houses, and as rigid as the House of Blood in their adherence to the divisions that had arisen out of the civil war.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n
