The Ivy Crown<\/strong><\/p>\n

The whole process is a lie,
\nunless,
\ncrowned by excess,
\nIt break forcefully,
\none way or another,
\nfrom its confinement\u2014
\nor find a deeper well.
\nAntony and Cleopatra
\nwere right;
\nthey have shown
\nthe way. I love you
\nor I do not live
\nat all.<\/p>\n

Daffodil time
\nis past. This is
\nsummer, summer!
\nthe heart says,
\nand not even the full of it.
\nNo doubts
\nare permitted\u2014
\nthough they will come
\nand may
\nbefore our time
\noverwhelm us.
\nWe are only mortal
\nbut being mortal
\ncan defy our fate.<\/p>\n

Sure
\nlove is cruel
\nand selfish
\nand totally obtuse\u2014
\nat least, blinded by the light,

William Carlos Williams has always been one of my favourite poets, and this one of my favourite poems. I quoted the final stanza to a friend recently, because they were absolutely the right words in the right order for that moment. I hope you may enjoy this selection equally today.<\/p>\n
