Jennifer Compton<\/p><\/div>\n

Last week, the new Ockham New Zealand Book Awards<\/strong> announced the first-ever longlist <\/a>for NZ’s national book awards.<\/p>\n

Although very exciting in and of itself, I was thrilled to see that my fellow Tuesday Poet, Jennifer Compton, appeared on the list — for her publication Mr Clean & The Junkie<\/b><\/em> published by M\u0101karo Press.<\/p>\n

\n<\/em><\/p>\n

“There is a darkness here: and also an itinerant rainbow <\/em><\/span>
\n strolling like a twister with one lazy finger dipped in water.<\/em><\/span>
\n There is a harbour: because of the rainbow there may be<\/em><\/span>
\n a glory, like a saint’s halo, which is an optical effect. Glory.

The House of Wives<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Ah \u2013 <\/em>he said. Camogli. Casa delle mogli. The house of wives.
\nBecause their husbands were fishermen and so always at sea.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Or it can mean houses packed close together. The village<\/span>
\n like one house with many wives, calling out to each other<\/span><\/p>\n

from their windows. Or, further back, after the deity, Camuli.<\/span>
\n A sound too much like Ca\u2019mogli to let the happy joke go past.<\/span><\/p>\n

But \u2013 <\/em>I replied. If they were fishermen then many would
\nhave been drowned dead. The house of widows instead. <\/em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

That is not the Italian way. We infer, we imply, we don\u2019t say.
\nBut now, of course, it is for the tourists, they sell ice cream.
\n<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

2.<\/span><\/p>\n

Paddling on the pebble beach \u2013 ouch ouch \u2013 I come upon<\/span>
\n a blue clothes peg, her function intact, at the high tide line.<\/span><\/p>\n

Back in Australia my pegs had gone missing mysteriously<\/span>
\n then the day we found a satin bowerbird\u2019s courtship avenue.<\/span><\/p>\n

The males adore blue, filch drinking straws and bottle tops<\/span>
\n and pegs. What had been vanishing was always and only blue.<\/span><\/p>\n

They used to make do with berries and flowers, which faded,<\/span>
\n but amcoplast solvent drives them on to a fresh excess of art,<\/span><\/p>\n

brandishing the fetish, strutting and tossing, laying it down pat.<\/span>
\n This very peg flies home, a gift from Camogli to our bowerbirds.<\/span><\/p>\n
