Casa delle mogli. The house of wives.<br \/>\nBecause their husbands were fishermen and so always at sea.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Or it can mean houses packed close together. The village<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080;\"> like one house with many wives, calling out to each other<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">from their windows. Or, further back, after the deity, Camuli.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080;\"> A sound too much like Ca\u2019mogli to let the happy joke go past.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><em>But \u2013 <\/em>I replied. <em>If they were fishermen then many would<br \/>\nhave been drowned dead. The house of widows instead. <\/em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><em>That is not the Italian way. We infer, we imply, we don\u2019t say.<br \/>\nBut now, of course, it is for the tourists, they sell ice cream.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">2.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Paddling on the pebble beach \u2013 ouch ouch \u2013 I come upon<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080;\"> a blue clothes peg, her function intact, at the high tide line.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Back in Australia my pegs had gone missing mysteriously<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080;\"> then the day we found a satin bowerbird\u2019s courtship avenue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The males adore blue, filch drinking straws and bottle tops<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080;\"> and pegs.
