{"id":31379,"date":"2016-02-09T06:59:02","date_gmt":"2016-02-08T17:59:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/?p=31379"},"modified":"2016-02-09T06:59:02","modified_gmt":"2016-02-08T17:59:02","slug":"pine-trees-and-the-sky-evening-by-rupert-brooke","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2016\/02\/09\/pine-trees-and-the-sky-evening-by-rupert-brooke\/","title":{"rendered":"Pine-Trees And The Sky: Evening by Rupert Brooke"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;d watched the sorrow of the evening sky,<br \/>\nAnd smelt the sea, and earth, and the warm clover,<br \/>\nAnd heard the waves, and the seagull&#8217;s mocking cry.<\/p>\n<p>And in them all was only the old cry,<br \/>\nThat song they always sing &#8212; &#8220;The best is over!<br \/>\nYou may remember now, and think, and sigh,<br \/>\nO silly lover!&#8221;<br \/>\nAnd I was tired and sick that all was over,<br \/>\nAnd because I,<br \/>\nFor all my thinking, never could recover<br \/>\nOne moment of the good hours that were over.<br \/>\nAnd I was sorry and sick, and wished to die.<\/p>\n<p>Then from the sad west turning wearily,<br \/>\nI saw the pines against the white north sky,<br \/>\nVery beautiful, and still, and bending over<br \/>\nTheir sharp black heads against a quiet sky.<br \/>\nAnd there was peace in them; and I<br \/>\nWas happy, and forgot to play the lover,<br \/>\nAnd laughed, and did no longer wish to die;<br \/>\nBeing glad of you, O pine-trees and the sky!<\/p>\n<p>Rupert Brooke, 1887 &#8211; 1915<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<\/p>\n<p>I am starting my year in poetry by featuring poems that focus on trees \u2014 but which also highlight the human emoional and psychological connection to trees.
