Kemal Atat\u00fcrk in 1934.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, I reflected on the dearth of ANZAC novels in the century that has elapsed since WW1, and the 71 years since WW2 ended. However, I&#8217;ve continued to check out what&#8217;s available and am pleased to have identified a few more ANZAC-themed children&#8217;s novels that have been published over the past few years.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2016\/04\/29\/some-anzac-themed-nz-childrens-books\/best-mates\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-32130\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-32130\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Best-Mates-140x150.jpg\" alt=\"Best Mates\" width=\"140\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Best-Mates-140x150.jpg 140w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Best-Mates.jpg 203w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 140px) 100vw, 140px\" \/><\/a>These include <a href=\"http:\/\/www.philippawerry.co.nz\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Pippa Werry&#8217;s<\/a> <strong><em>Best Mates<\/em><\/strong> (2014), a children&#8217;s picture book that tells the story of three friends who enlist in the ANZAC corps and end up fighting at Gallipoli.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2016\/04\/29\/some-anzac-themed-nz-childrens-books\/my-brothers-war\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-32131\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-32131\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/My-Brothers-War-98x150.jpg\" alt=\"My Brother's War\" width=\"98\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/My-Brothers-War-98x150.jpg 98w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/My-Brothers-War-195x300.jpg 195w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/My-Brothers-War.jpg 220w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 98px) 100vw, 98px\" \/><\/a>David Hill has written two ANZAC-themed books for Junior readers (9-12 year olds.) <strong><em>My Brother&#8217;s War<\/em> <\/strong>(2012) follows two NZ brothers in WW1, one of whom enlists as a soldier, while the other is a conscientious objector&#8212;paths that lead both of them to the trenches in France.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Enemy Camp<\/em><\/strong> (2016) focuses on NZ&#8217;s WW2 history, and the incident at the Featherston prisoner-of-war camp that resulted in the deaths of one guard and forty-eight Japanese prisoners.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2016\/04\/29\/some-anzac-themed-nz-childrens-books\/cov_brave-bess-indd\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-32132\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-32132\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Brave-Bess_cover-96x150.jpg\" alt=\"COV_Brave Bess.indd\" width=\"96\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Brave-Bess_cover-96x150.jpg 96w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Brave-Bess_cover-192x300.jpg 192w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Brave-Bess_cover.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 96px) 100vw, 96px\" \/><\/a>Susan Brocker&#8217;s <strong><em>Brave Bess and the ANZAC Horses<\/em><\/strong> (2010) is a fictionalized account of Bess, one of only four NZ horses shipped overseas with WW1 mounted troops that returned home to NZ. <strong><em>1914: Riding Into War<\/em><\/strong> (2014), also by Susan Brocker, follows three young men in a mounted rifle regiment that are separated from their horses when they are sent to Gallipoli from North Africa, in 1914.<\/p>\n<p>So definitely a few more books for children than I could initially identify, exploring and interpreting NZ&#8217;s ANZAC history through fiction.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This has been an ANZAC week on the blog, from acknowledging\u00a0 ANZAC Day itself on Monday, through ANZAC-themed poetry on Tuesday, to yesterday and the famous ANZAC Memorial penned by M.
