Given that I would get involved on this matter, it is probably not surprising I am shouting-out for Arbor Day.<\/p>\n<p>Firstly, by telling you why I think trees matter, generally. Put simply:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_31275\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2016\/01\/31\/its-book-release-week-and-thats-important-but-so-is-speaking-for-the-trees\/60-glandovey-road-trees-001a\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-31275\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31275\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-31275\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/60-Glandovey-Road-Trees-001a-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Lime Avenue, planted ca. 1932 \" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/60-Glandovey-Road-Trees-001a-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/60-Glandovey-Road-Trees-001a-113x150.jpg 113w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/60-Glandovey-Road-Trees-001a-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-31275\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lime Avenue, planted ca. 1932<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Trees deliver important environmental benefits (as follows):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>consuming carbon-dioxide and generating oxygen<\/li>\n<li>providing beneficial shade and cooling the environment (reducing temperatures) in summer<\/li>\n<li>helping filtering out and trap dust, pollen and smoke from the air<\/li>\n<li>providing shelter from wind and windblown debris<\/li>\n<li>trees help reduce surface water runoff, thus decreasing soil erosion and the accumulation of sediments and contaminants in streams<\/li>\n<li>fallen leaves can reduce soil temperature and soil moisture loss; decaying leaves promote soil microorganisms and provide nutrients for plant growth<\/li>\n<li>trees provide habitat for insects and birds and food for other animals &#8212; i.e. if we want to enjoy birdsong and garden sounds such as cicadas, then we need trees in our environment<\/li>\n<li>Trees also provide food for us!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In short, individually and collectively trees do an awful lot of good sh#t and help keep us alive and substantially improve our quality of life. Just sayin&#8217;&#8230; And here&#8217;s the really important thing: the real hits in terms of these benefits come from the large mature trees.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2016\/06\/05\/arbor-day-i-speak-for-the-trees\/144-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-32423\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-32423\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/144-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"144\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/144-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/144-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/144-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Trees also:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>assist in providing privacy and screen out or soften unattractive views<\/li>\n<li>provide landscape variety including through shape and form, colour from blossom and (deciduous) autumn leaves, and also scent<\/li>\n<li>assist in defining neighbourhood character and contributing to residents&#8217; sense of place, identity, and wellbeing<\/li>\n<li>heritage trees in particular also contribute to intergenerational identity through association with important events and iconic places, but also through continuity in the landscape.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2016\/06\/05\/arbor-day-i-speak-for-the-trees\/54-park-terrace-48-private-needs-protection-5-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-32424\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-32424\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/54-Park-Terrace-48-Private-needs-Protection-5-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"54 Park Terrace -48- Private  - needs Protection (5)\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/54-Park-Terrace-48-Private-needs-Protection-5-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/54-Park-Terrace-48-Private-needs-Protection-5-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/54-Park-Terrace-48-Private-needs-Protection-5-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>One of the reasons I got involved with trying to continuing listing and protecting Christchurch&#8217;s heritage trees was because of the tremendous sense of continuity and also hope I believe they have given people in the face of our city&#8217;s geography of loss following the 2010-2011 earthquakes. I feel we should honour the fact of their survival and cherish their continued presence in our landscape more, not less.<\/p>\n<p>From a purely pragmatic point of view, a formative experience in my early professional training was being exposed to the consequences of Stockholm City&#8217;s &#8220;fundamental brutalist&#8221; approach to the housing shortage of the 1960s. The 1950s approach in suburbs such as Vallingby, where the focus was on human(e)-scale development integrated with green spaces and retaining neighbourhood forested areas, was abandoned in favour of higher-rise concrete towers with minimalist landscaping, epitomised by areas such as Rinkeby.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_31466\" style=\"width: 254px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2016\/02\/18\/so-why-all-this-business-about-trees\/pohutakawa_clifton-bay-_3jpg\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-31466\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31466\" class=\"wp-image-31466 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Pohutakawa_Clifton-bay._3JPG-244x300.jpg\" alt=\"Pohutukawa, Clifton Bay, Sumner: still not saved.\" width=\"244\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Pohutakawa_Clifton-bay._3JPG-244x300.jpg 244w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Pohutakawa_Clifton-bay._3JPG-122x150.jpg 122w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Pohutakawa_Clifton-bay._3JPG.jpg 341w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 244px) 100vw, 244px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-31466\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pohutukawa, Clifton Bay, Sumner: still not saved.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This was justified in the name of &#8220;necessity&#8221; and &#8220;getting things done&#8221;, exactly the sort of rhetoric being used in post-earthquake Christchurch. The outcome in Stockholm was that no one who had any choice wanted to live in areas such as Rinkeby and as soon as choice offered anyone who could moved elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>Areas like Vallingby remained consistently sought after, however, and subsequent developments of the 1970s onward moved away from the 1960s approach. Urban design and environmental factors were accepted as playing a major contributing part in the social and economic dynamic.<\/p>\n<p>So it concerns me that the approach driving Christchurch&#8217;s post-earthquake &#8220;recovery&#8221; seems determined to (I might even say &#8220;hell-bent&#8221; on) pursue a course that has not delivered positive social, environmental or economic results elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>The approach to the city&#8217;s trees, which seems to be to treat them as readily disposable and an impediment to recovery, is all part of this approach. The &#8220;conversation&#8221; is all about the perceived &#8216;negatives&#8217; of trees. For example, during the Plan process, I noticed that shading and leaf drop were always discussed in pejorative terms, with little mention or apparent recognition that both these elements are also positives. And also without apparent consideration of causal factors such as pollution, which trees ameliorate.<\/p>\n<p>Oh yes, and trees are <em>very<\/em> &#8220;dangerous&#8221; &#8212; with the &#8220;threats&#8221; they potentially present emphasised but never, that I heard, placed in any sort of evidential context, eg\u00a0 the incidence of human death or injury caused by trees in an average year or decade.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_31467\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2016\/02\/18\/so-why-all-this-business-about-trees\/yaldhurst-gum_3\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-31467\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31467\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-31467\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Yaldhurst-Gum_3-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"The wonderful Yaldhurst blue gum\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Yaldhurst-Gum_3-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Yaldhurst-Gum_3-113x150.jpg 113w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Yaldhurst-Gum_3.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-31467\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The wonderful Yaldhurst blue gum<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Overall, I believe the positive contribution of trees to the planet and to our urban environments far outweighs the negatives. Most importantly in terms of our city&#8217;s mature trees being treated as readily disposable\/replaceable&#8212;which seems to be the post-earthquake <em>modus operandi<\/em>&#8212;it is exactly these trees that provide the greatest environmental benefits.<\/p>\n<p>So even <em>if<\/em> another tree is planted for every one removed, the environmental arrears, exactly like the benefits to human sense of place and identity, may well be intergenerational.<\/p>\n<p>But again to consider the matter in simple terms, Christchurch is a city on a plain.
