Since then I have patiently waited for each book in the series to come out, speculating and guessing as I go. Some readers, once they are really invested in a story start wishing for outcomes as the series progresses.

The Wall of Night series is down to its last book, provisionally named The Chaos Gate, and I can barely wait for it to come out as the 3rd book, Daughter of Blood, ended at a critical point. I don’t have a favourite character as such, but I do have a small wish list of what I’d like to see occur in the final book.

I happen to like a touch of romance in my science fiction and fantasy. I read romantic fantasy; it is a sub-genre I am partial too. I hope this explains my reader wishes. I am also trying to avoid spoilers, so I am concentrating on the “what” and not going into the “why” too much.

Secondly, I am leaving the plot entirely up to the author; it is personal outcomes for the characters that interest me the most. The plot is really good as it currently stands, and I know it is in good hands.

For the 4th book The Chaos Gate, I would like to see a “happily ever after” for Khar and Myrathis (Myr for short). Yes – I read all 3 books end to end, including Daughter of Blood — and no, I do not have inside knowledge of what is going to happen in the final book. All I know is that when Kalan, going by his undercover name of Khar, kissed Myr’s hand on page 541*, I knew it was all go. This was the “significant kiss” in terms of story-telling:

“Myr nodded, wanting to match his calm. But she still almost jerked her hand back in surprise when Khar took it, bowing over her fingers in the manner of the old stories. “Thank you,” he said, straightening, and she nodded again, awkward with the old shyness …”

There were a lot of minor characters in Daughter of Blood. Most notable was Rook, from the House of Adamant. Rook had a whole chapter to himself, as well as portions of other chapters and was rather monk-like. I hope Rook gets his adventure, his heroic moment, and gets to go home. Rook struck me as someone who had “limited choices in life” due to Derai constraints.

Rook certainly thought he got the ‘short straw’ when we meet him in Daughter of Blood. A good outcome for him would be nice, as I suspect he will feature in the final book. I am hoping the reader will meet Onnorin, Rook’s kinswoman and best friend. Rook mentions her quite a bit in Daughter of Blood.

The other significant minor character was Tireal, from the House of Stars, who was like “Hollywood A-listed”, complete with the looks, the glamour and the entourage. I certainly did not expect “glamour” but I was glad I got it. I’d like to see Tireal get his own novella, in part so that I can see more of the House of Stars, but also because Tireal is very good at what he does. He made a strong impression. Tireal and his party were “on the spot” for an un-related reason, and I’d like that to have a positive outcome. Yorindesarinen, who was pivotal in Derai history, also came from this House.

Of all the Derai Houses shown, The House of the Rose and the House of Stars are the most intriguing. As a reader, I hope we see more of them. The Rose, I suspect, are also spymasters as well as diplomats, while Stars are seen as flashy by the other Houses. We as readers, are only just starting to see the other Derai houses, and they all seem to have their own traits. I hope we see more of the other Houses in action in The Chaos Gate.

* UK edition

—

About June Young:

June says: “I have been a science fiction and fantasy fan nearly all my life. I enjoy both the media part of it (TV and movies) and the written form (short and long fiction). Occasionally, I do a book review.
