Each post has been wonderfully different, so when Andrew asked if he could contribute a post as well, how could I say no?<\/p>\n<p>So here it is, our bonus Character feature: enjoy!<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Character Feature: Rowan Birchmoon, the Winter Woman<br \/>\n<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><em>A Guest Post by Andrew Robins<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11045\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2012\/01\/14\/all-the-pretty-covers\/bigheirofnightmmuk-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-11045\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11045\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-11045\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/bigheirofnightMMUK1-190x300.jpg\" alt=\"UK\/Aus\/NZ\" width=\"190\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/bigheirofnightMMUK1-190x300.jpg 190w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/bigheirofnightMMUK1-95x150.jpg 95w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/bigheirofnightMMUK1-651x1024.jpg 651w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/bigheirofnightMMUK1.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 190px) 100vw, 190px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-11045\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">UK\/Aus\/NZ<\/p><\/div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\">I was inspired to write this addition to \u201cThe Wall of Night\u201d Character Series when I read Paul Weimer&#8217;s great <a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2016\/08\/26\/the-wall-of-night-character-series-paul-weimer-features-myr-aka-lady-mouse\/\" target=\"_blank\">post on Myr, AKA the Lady Mouse<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Paul portrayed Myr as a woman who was out of her place, and in an environment where her differences from those around her meant that she was forced to deal with daily hostility and constant suspicion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\">This description reminded me of another character who incidentally was one of my favourites from the first book in the series: Rowan Birchmoon\u00a0 &#8211; the Winter Woman.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #003366;\"> Like Myr, Rowan is out of her place. She is consort to the Earl of Night, and living amongst a people who are alien to her. Some of the Derai she deals with day to day value her, but to most she is and always will be an outsider whom they suffer to live amongst them only out of respect for their Earl.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Rowan is also a person who is not obviously strong, or powerful. As it happens she can fight, and she is brave, but she is not someone you would describe as a warrior. <\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_30067\" style=\"width: 196px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2015\/09\/17\/about-the-characters-meet-the-minor-players-in-the-heir-of-night-eria\/heirofnight_new_small\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-30067\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30067\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-30067\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/HeirofNight_new_small-186x300.jpg\" alt=\"USA\" width=\"186\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/HeirofNight_new_small.jpg 186w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/HeirofNight_new_small-93x150.jpg 93w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 186px) 100vw, 186px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-30067\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">USA<\/p><\/div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\">In some ways it would be easy to see Rowan as a woman who is defined by the love that she has for Tasarion, the Earl of Night. This love is real and living, and it shines through the first half of <a style=\"color: #003366;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.helenlowe.info\/heirofnight.html\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Heir of Night<\/em><\/a>. But if you have read the first book, you know there is much more to Rowan, and her role on the Wall than her love for the Earl.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Rowan has strength of the kind that allows her to remain warm, human and engaged even as she struggles with hard choices and great responsibilities. She is also a character who despite appearing to be at times passive, is definitely following her own path and remaining true to herself and her people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Hopefully readers of this post will agree that these ladies, Winter and Mouse, are pivotal characters in the series &#8212; perhaps unexpectedly so in the case of Rowan Birchmoon. <\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Both are also strong in ways we don\u2019t necessarily expect \u2013 at least when we\u00a0 first meet them. And both are characters who are defined by strength of Character \u2013 which they show in abundance when the chips are down.
