I was also impressed by the progamme that Coordinator, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ClaireMabey\" target=\"_blank\">Claire Mabey<\/a>, put together. One of the most significant\u00a0 testaments to her achievement is that in every time slot I was agonising between different scheduled events. \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<p>Overall, I have to say that the weekend exceeded all my expectations and so huge kudos to Claire, the <a href=\"http:\/\/authors.org.nz\/\" target=\"_blank\">NZ Society of Authors<\/a>, and their wonderful support team (yes, Andrew, Ashleigh, &amp; Hebe, to name only a very few, I am looking at you!) for all the work they put in to make it so.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_32852\" style=\"width: 158px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2016\/07\/28\/happening-soon-the-inaugural-national-writers-forum-17-18-september\/chris-cleave_author\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-32852\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32852\" class=\"size-full wp-image-32852\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Chris-Cleave_author.jpg\" alt=\"Chris Cleave\" width=\"148\" height=\"160\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Chris-Cleave_author.jpg 148w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Chris-Cleave_author-139x150.jpg 139w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 148px) 100vw, 148px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-32852\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chris Cleave<\/p><\/div>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Keynote Speaker: Chris Cleave<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">The weekend began on the highest of notes with a wonderful keynote address from UK author,<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/chriscleave.com\/about-2\/\" target=\"_blank\">Chris Cleave<\/a>. <span style=\"color: #333333;\">I found his address incredibly inspirational (and I believe everyone else did as well.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Titled <strong>&#8220;The Clocks Are Striking Thirteen&#8221;<\/strong>, it comprised a sobering look at the current state of the world and &#8212; in the gentlest possible way &#8212; reminded us that democracy and civil society are not spectator sports and that as Augustine of Hippo reminded us nearly 2000 years ago, <em>&#8220;as we are&#8230;so are the times.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2016\/09\/19\/the-inaugural-national-writers-forum-was-awesome\/little-bee_us_jacket1-206x300\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-33191\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-33191\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Little-Bee_us_jacket1-206x300-103x150.jpg\" alt=\"little-bee_us_jacket1-206x300\" width=\"103\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Little-Bee_us_jacket1-206x300-103x150.jpg 103w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Little-Bee_us_jacket1-206x300.jpg 206w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 103px) 100vw, 103px\" \/><\/a>The two highlight quotes for me were:<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><em>&#8220;You can tell a stranger a story &#8212; and again have two favourite quotes to share:<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><em>&#8220;It isn&#8217;t about my stories changing the world; it&#8217;s about the world&#8217;s stories changing me.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><em>&#8220;I need to be proud of the work when it goes off my desk.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">To which I can only reply, &#8220;Yes.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Two wonderful sessions and Forum highlights. But there was so much more&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>So Many Great Panels:<\/h3>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the thing, though; there were so many highlights, not least the debate at the end of the first day. The moot was &#8220;That NZ Books Need Special Treatment&#8221; and I have to say that the negative team of Paula Morris and Leilani Tamu totally kicked butt (imho.)<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_33205\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2016\/09\/19\/the-inaugural-national-writers-forum-was-awesome\/nwf_debate\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-33205\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33205\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-33205\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/NWF_Debate-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"national-writers-forum-debate\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/NWF_Debate-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/NWF_Debate-150x112.jpg 150w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/NWF_Debate-768x573.jpg 768w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/NWF_Debate.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-33205\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo credit: Elizabeth Heritage<\/p><\/div>\n<p>However, insights from the other\u00a0 panels I attended include:<\/p>\n<h4><strong>The Perfect Pitch: Publisher Panel<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The four panelists (five if you count the Chair, Scott Pack) agreed that the most important thing about your pitch is not the synopsis, but what I call the &#8216;spruik&#8217; &#8212; the short punchy &#8220;sell&#8221; on why my\/your book rocks, which apparently very often ends up on the backcover of the published book. Food for thought, indeed.<\/p>\n<h4>Unprintable Books: Writing for the Digital Era<\/h4>\n<p>This presentation from the UK-based <a href=\"http:\/\/www.katepullinger.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Kate Pullinger<\/a> was fascinating, canvassing new writing platforms and projects such as episodic writing, collaborative projects, developing a literary form that is native to the smartphone (not cracked yet &#8211; a &#8220;watch this space&#8221;), and public projects such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1418now.org.uk\/letter\/new-read\/\" target=\"_blank\">Letter To An Unknown Soldier<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4>Beyond The Book: Being A Writer<\/h4>\n<p>This session with (the always wonderful) <a href=\"http:\/\/nalinisingh.blogspot.co.nz\/\" target=\"_blank\">Nalini Singh<\/a> and publicist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalwritersforum.org.nz\/staff-member\/yvonne-thynne\/\" target=\"_blank\">Yvonne Thynne<\/a> (also wonderful) primarily addressed building engagement with readers and included both ideas and &#8220;writer beware&#8221; pitfalls. At any rate, I hope those who were keen on a more in-depth exercise were not too disappointed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">The topics traversed included:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">The Scope of Fantasy Fiction<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">World-building: The Fantasy-Science Fiction Difference<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Tricks Of The World-Building Trade<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Inspiration &amp; Perspiration<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Creating Otherness<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Keeping It Real<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Continuity &amp; Consistency<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Beware The Infodump<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Less Is More<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Plus there were spot prizes and a &#8220;world guessing&#8221; contest with a mystery prize for the person who came closest &#8212; which was a set of Books 1-3 of<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/helenlowe.info\/wallofnight.html\" target=\"_blank\">The Wall Of Night<\/a> <span style=\"color: #333333;\">series.
