Although resident in New Zealand at the time the book (and series) was published, Russell Kirkpatrick now lives in Australia.<\/p>\n<p>According to Wikipedia, <i>Across the Face of the World<\/i> was the biggest selling debut fantasy in the United States in 2008.<\/p>\n<h4><em><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2010\/08\/30\/what-im-reading-7\/guardian\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1143\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1143 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Guardian.jpg\" alt=\"Guardian\" width=\"98\" height=\"152\" \/><\/a>Guardian of the Dead<\/em> by Karen Healey<\/h4>\n<p>Karen Healey not only lives and works in Christchurch, but <em>Guardian of the Dead\u00a0<\/em>is largely set in the (pre &#8216;quake) Garden City. It was first published by Allen &amp; Unwin in Australia and subsequently by Little, Brown &amp; Co Books for Young Readers in the USA &#8212; and it&#8217;s won more awards and accolades than you can shake a stick at , including in NZ, Australia, and the USA.<\/p>\n<h4><em><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2015\/05\/30\/celebrating-nz-speculative-fiction-for-nzbookmonthmay-wrapping-up-week-4-the-month\/spark\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-29192\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-29192 size-thumbnail alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Spark-98x150.jpg\" alt=\"Spark\" width=\"98\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Spark-98x150.jpg 98w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Spark.jpg 181w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 98px) 100vw, 98px\" \/><\/a>Spark<\/em> by Rachael Craw<\/h4>\n<p>Spark is YA science fiction and its published by Walker Books in Australia\u00a0 &#8212; where the legions of Rachael&#8217;s fans are known as the &#8220;Spark army.&#8221; w00t!<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s also available on this side of the Tasman as is only fitting since Rachael, who originally hailed from Christchurch, now resides in Nelson.<\/p>\n<p>So you see, these books may be homegrown, but people really are reading and loving them in\u00a0 a great many other places.
