So although I am going to suggest a few more &#8220;Great Mums of SFF&#8221; now, I am hoping you may be able to help me out with a few more names.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/?attachment_id=33510\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-33510\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-33510\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Boneshaker_Cover_Front-100x150.jpg\" alt=\"boneshaker_cover_front\" width=\"100\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Boneshaker_Cover_Front-100x150.jpg 100w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Boneshaker_Cover_Front-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Boneshaker_Cover_Front.jpg 275w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 100px) 100vw, 100px\" \/><\/a>Just to be clear, here are the criteria:<\/p>\n<p>&#8212; the character doesn&#8217;t have to be the main character in the book but does have to be a central character with major page time.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212; being a mother has to be central in some way to the character&#8217;s role in the story, rather than a background fact that otherwise doesn&#8217;t really affect the character&#8217;s arc. (For example, this would rule out Mara in the Empire series, where motherhood is not really a significant part of her arc: imho.)<\/p>\n<p>&#8212; the character can appear in any form of SFF: from magic realism, through paranormal and steampunk to epic fantasy; from near future dystopia through space opera to hard Sci Fi. (See cover above.)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rosala de Garsenc <\/strong>and<strong> Signy de Barbentain<\/strong> in <a href=\"http:\/\/brightweavings.com\/ggk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Guy Gavriel Kay&#8217;s<\/a> <strong><em>A Song For Arbonne<\/em><\/strong> &#8212; both are prominent characters in the story.\u00a0 <strong>Signy<\/strong> is Countess of Arbonne and her relationship with her daughters, one living, one dead, plays an important part in shaping her character and role in the story. <strong>Rosala<\/strong> flees her husband and her country in the late stages of pregnancy because her father-in-law has threatened to take her baby and because she does not want her child raised to emulate his cruelty and megalomania.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2011\/07\/10\/six-great-heroes-of-epic-fantasy-part-2\/dragonbane\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6695\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-6695\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Dragonbane-88x150.jpg\" alt=\"Dragonbane\" width=\"88\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Dragonbane-88x150.jpg 88w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Dragonbane-177x300.jpg 177w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Dragonbane.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 88px) 100vw, 88px\" \/><\/a>Jenny Waynest<\/strong> in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.barbarahambly.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Barbara Hambly&#8217;s<\/a> <strong><em>Dragonsbane<\/em><\/strong> &#8212; Jenny is a wizard and the main character in the book; she has two sons and although they don&#8217;t play a large part in the story directly, part of what Jenny struggles with as a character is how to reconcile being a wizard as well as a mother.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Teia<\/strong> in <a href=\"http:\/\/elspethcooper.com\/blog\/\" target=\"_blank\">Elspeth Cooper&#8217;s <\/a><strong>The Wild Hunt<\/strong> quartet, is pregnant through much of the first two books and a new mother by the end of the third book (the fourth &#8212; not unlike mine \ud83d\ude09 &#8212; is forthcoming), so motherhood is unarguably central to her arc and gives it additional interest, imo. (See cover below right.)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Catelyn Tully<\/strong> and <strong>Cersei Lannister<\/strong> in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.georgerrmartin.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">George RR Martin&#8217;s<\/a> <strong>A Song of Ice and Fire<\/strong> series (aka <strong><em>A Game Of Thrones<\/em><\/strong> after the first book) are both women whose love and concern for their children (chiefly <strong>Catelyn<\/strong>) as well as their ambition for them (chiefly <strong>Cersei<\/strong>) are central to their character arcs in the story.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2013\/08\/24\/just-arrived-the-ravens-shadow-by-elspeth-cooper\/ravensshadow_thumb1\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-22052\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-22052\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/RavensShadow_thumb1-94x150.jpg\" alt=\"RavensShadow_thumb[1]\" width=\"94\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/RavensShadow_thumb1-94x150.jpg 94w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/RavensShadow_thumb1-189x300.jpg 189w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/RavensShadow_thumb1.jpg 224w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 94px) 100vw, 94px\" \/><\/a>Rayvan<\/strong> in David Gemmell&#8217;s <strong><em>The King Beyond the Gate<\/em><\/strong> scrapes in as both a sufficiently prominent secondary character and also because, as a widow with adult children, it is her concern for them as well as their community and wider issues of justice that drive her to becme a rebel and leader int he wider world.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Morgaine<\/strong> is the central character in Marion Bradley&#8217;s <em><strong>The Mists of Avalon<\/strong><\/em> and the mother of Mordred (Gwydion), which shapes (or twists) both her arc and the &#8220;Matter of Britain&#8221; story. (See cover below right.)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Vianne Rocher<\/strong> in <em><strong>Chocolat<\/strong><\/em> &#8212; since I have included magic realism in the Fantasy pantheon (as I believe it is) Vianne Rocher&#8217;s motherhood to Anouk is a key aspect of the book and she therefore belongs on this list.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2015\/11\/13\/the-matter-of-britain-arthurian-fantasy\/mist-of-avalon-3\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-30520\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-30520\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Mist-of-Avalon-103x150.jpg\" alt=\"Mist of Avalon\" width=\"103\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Mist-of-Avalon-103x150.jpg 103w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Mist-of-Avalon-205x300.jpg 205w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Mist-of-Avalon.jpg 227w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 103px) 100vw, 103px\" \/><\/a>Wow, with Jessica as well, I actually got past being able to count &#8217;em all on the fingers of two hands: now we&#8217;re rollin&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>So please tell me more mothers of SFF (consistent with the criteria above) so all digits can be deployed!
