Recently I’ve resumed my \u201cAbout the Characters\u201d posts that focus on the minor characters in The Wall Of Night<\/a> series \u2014 because \u201cI think it\u2019s the presence of the smaller characters that \u201cmakes\u201d a story, creating texture around the main points of view.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The feature is posting every second Thursday, alternating with A Geography of Haarth<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Note:<\/span> In terms of being \u201cminor\u201d the characters must at least have a walk-on part and a few lines to say, but \u201cminor\u201d can also simply mean \u201cnot a lead protagonist .\u201d So some of the players that feature here will have a reasonable degree of air time in the story — like Sister Korriya<\/a> on February 16 or Garan<\/a> in 2015.<\/p>\n

Today’s character is Soril, from The Heir Of Night<\/em><\/a>.

Soril:<\/strong> a guard, serving the (Derai) House of Night<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

‘Asantir nodded, satisfied, then crossed to the main door and stared into the shadowed hall.\u00a0 “Oh, yes,” she murmured, “they are close.\u00a0 It doesn’t need a seeker to know that.”\u00a0 She looked across the room to Sarus.\u00a0 “Keep a sharp eye out, old friend.\u00a0 It may be more than cold steel we have to deal with.”<\/span><\/p>\n

The sergeant grunted, settling his shield more firmly on his arm, and she smiled slightly, as if that were answer enough.\u00a0 The guard, Soril, who was from the keep garrison, looked from one to the other doubtfully.\u00a0 “Are you sure there’s something out there, Captain?”<\/span><\/p>\n

“Ay,” said Asantir, “and they know we’re here as well.\u00a0 We are past seekers and shielding now, as far as that goes.”<\/span><\/p>\n

“How do you know?” asked Ber, another guard from the keep garrison.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sarus chuckled from the other side of the room.\u00a0 “How does the raven scent battle?\u00a0 It’s in the very air.” ‘<\/span><\/p>\n
