Flash fiction writing has entered the sphere of respectability within literary circles. W.W. Norton&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/books.wwnorton.com\/books\/Flash-Fiction-International\/\" target=\"_blank\">Flash Fiction Anthology<\/a> published in 2015 features short short pieces from Etgar Keret to Christchurch authors Frankie McMillan and James Norcliffe. The third edition of the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.braddockavenuebooks.com\/bookmark\/congratulations\" target=\"_blank\">Best Small Fictions<\/a> <\/em>series has recently selected winners from thousands of submissions from around the world.<\/p>\n<p>The number of publications specialising in flash seems to be proliferating.<\/p>\n<p>In New Zealand we have the annual National Flash Fiction Day contest (<a href=\"https:\/\/nationalflash.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/nationalflash.org\/<\/a>) and <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flash-frontier.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\">Flash Frontier, An Adventure in Short Fiction<\/a>, <\/em>both developed by Michelle Elvy.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a lot to be gained from being part of a larger community of like-minded flashers. We offer each other encouragement and feedback, or bail one another out if we get caught loitering outside school gates in raincoats. <em>Oops<\/em>, wrong kind of flashing.<\/p>\n<p>Witness the popularity of Facebook public groups such as Nancy Stohlman&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/1430827117170824\/\" target=\"_blank\">&#8216;Flash Fiction Lovers&#8217;<\/a> and Ash Chantler&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/28291339826\/\" target=\"_blank\">&#8216;International Flash Fiction Network&#8217;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>On line or print versions have flourished recently. I&#8217;ve just finished reading the review copy of <a href=\"https:\/\/flashfictionmagazine.com\/flash-fiction-magazine-issue-3\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Flash Fiction Magazine \u2212 Issue 3<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Shannon Huffman, chief editor for <em>Flash Fiction Magazine <\/em>(FFM), provides this blurb on the forthcoming edition:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong><em>&#8220;An enthralling anthology of brief encounters\u2026<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><em>Some tales can take a lifetime to tell, others unfold in an instant. This third issue of\u00a0Flash Fiction Magazine\u00a0once again celebrates the latter.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Sound good? I enjoyed it, and am pleased to have my piece <em>Shadow <\/em>included in the collection.<\/p>\n<p>Reading the <em>FFM<\/em> collection started me thinking about the role of anthologies and how they support the flash writing community.<\/p>\n<p>Australian Matt Potter runs the <em>Truth Serum <\/em>(https:\/\/truthserumpress.net\/), which publishes\u00a0anthologies and the on-line publication <em>Pure Slush. <\/em>Recently they have brought out <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bookdepository.com\/True-Truth-Serum-Vol-1-Truth-Serum-Press\/9781925536294\">True<\/a>, <\/em>an anthology of stories, essays and poems, another opportunity for writers of short form to get stories out there.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/paulbeckmanstories.com\/\">Paul Beckman<\/a> is a stalwart of the flash community. His stories have appeared in a multitude of flash publications.
