In part it’s about grammatical correctness, not for its own sake but because it endeavours to ensure clarity of meaning. For example, what is conveyed by:

“Eats, shoots and leaves”

— or, if one prefers the Oxford comma (which I kind of do): “Eats, shoots, and leaves” —

is entirely different from:

“Eats shoots and leaves.”

It may only be a little comma, but what a huge difference to sense and meaning it makes. And that’s important when you’re writing anything, but certainly a novel-length work of fiction. Paying attention to such matters can also avoid unintentional humour as well…

The other reason Style matters is because it’s about consistency in the presentation of the story, which is all about quality of reader experience in terms of both understanding and avoiding distractions. For example, part of The Wall Of Night series style is that mindspeech is always in italics with speech marks. In that way, the reader should always know, even without any other tags, that this is mindspeech and the conversation is private, as opposed to having been spoken aloud.

So that’s why style guides are an essential artefact of the writing life.

*Artefact: "a functional or decorative human-made object."

Recently I’ve been sharing a few artefacts* of the writing life with you and this week the spotlight’s on the Style Guide.
